Leviton 84003-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Leviton 84016-40 wallplate a 2-gang plate with two duplex receptacle openings?
Yes. The Leviton 84016-40 is a standard-size 2-gang wallplate cut for two duplex receptacle openings, so it covers two side-by-side duplex receptacles in a two-gang box. If your openings are decorator/rocker style rather than duplex, this cutout will not line up.
2) Does this Leviton stainless plate mount to the receptacle or to the box?
It is a device-mount plate: the screws go into the receptacle's mounting strap, not into the box or a separate mounting bracket. That gives a flush fit against the wall and is what you want on standard residential and commercial device installs. If your job calls for a box-mount or screwless two-piece plate, this is not the one.
3) What is the Leviton 84016-40 wallplate made of, and will it hold up in a kitchen or wash-down area?
The plate is 302 stainless steel, non-magnetic, which resists corrosion and tarnishing. That is why these get specified in kitchens, utility rooms, labs and commercial corridors where painted or plastic plates discolor. Stainless also takes cleaning chemicals better than nylon.
4) What is the difference between Leviton 84003-40, 84016-40 and 84103-40?
All three are stainless steel Leviton wallplates ordered off the same family, and you pick the one whose gang count and cutouts match your devices. 84016-40 is the 2-gang duplex receptacle configuration. Order by the exact model number that matches the device layout in your box, since the plates are not interchangeable across different opening patterns.
5) Will a standard-size stainless plate cover an oversized or damaged wall opening?
No. This is a standard-size 2-gang plate, so it covers a normally cut opening only. If the drywall around the box is torn out or the cutout was made oversize, you need a jumbo/oversize plate instead. Standard is the right call on clean new construction and tidy renovation cutouts.
6) Why would I need a non-magnetic stainless wallplate?
302 stainless is non-magnetic, so it is used where magnetic interference has to be avoided, such as near sensitive instrumentation or imaging equipment, and where magnetic-grade stainless would be rejected on the spec. For ordinary offices and homes the practical benefit is simply corrosion and tarnish resistance.
7) Are the mounting screws included with this Leviton stainless wallplate, or do I reuse the ones on the receptacle?
Wallplate screws ship with the plate and are finished to match the stainless face. For a property manager standardizing a building, that matters: mixing a chrome or painted screw into a stainless plate is the detail that makes a run of outlets look inconsistent. Keep the device's own strap screws in place; the plate screws are separate.
