Locknetics MG1200-2-630 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Locknetics MG Series maglock hold a pair of doors, or do I need two separate locks?
The MG Series double magnet configuration covers a pair of doors with one unit, so you order one lock and one power run instead of two. Holding force is either 600 lb or 1200 lb per the model you pick, and the same double setup is offered in both. If you're doing a single leaf, that's a different configuration in the same series. For a double-door alternative, ZenSupply also carries the Alarm Controls 1200D Series double magnetic lock and the DynaLock 2250 Series, both surface mounted.
2) What happens to a Locknetics MG maglock when the power goes out?
It unlocks. The MG Series is fail-safe, meaning the magnet only holds while it's energized, so a power loss or a fire alarm release drops the door open. That's what makes maglocks workable on egress doors, and it's also why they always need a code-compliant release device wired in ahead of them. If your application needs the door to stay locked without power, a maglock of any brand is the wrong device.
3) Can I run a Locknetics MG maglock on 12 volts, or does it have to be 24?
Either. The MG Series is dual voltage: 12 VDC at 0.5A or 24 VDC at 0.25A. Size the supply off whichever rail your access control panel is already running. On a 12 volt system budget half an amp per lock; on 24 volt it's a quarter amp. Worth doing that math before you add a second door to an existing power supply.
4) What is the difference between the standard and monitored MG Series maglock?
The monitored version (DT model) adds a door status sensor on an SPDT switch that reports whether the door is open or closed, plus a relock timer adjustable from 0 to 90 seconds. If your access control head end wants a door position input, or you need a delay before the magnet re-energizes so the door isn't fighting a closer, order monitored. If the panel already has a separate door contact and you don't need the timer, the standard model does the job. Both are offered at 600 lb and 1200 lb.
5) Is the Locknetics MG Series maglock fire door rated?
The MG Series carries a UL10C listing, which is the positive pressure fire door test standard, and a UL294 listing for access control system units. Those are the two listings a spec on an institutional or healthcare job usually asks a maglock to carry. As with any fail-safe magnetic lock, the fire alarm has to drop power to it on activation.
6) What magnetic lock should I use instead of the MG Series on an exterior or wet door?
The MG Series is specified for indoor use only, so for an opening exposed to weather the peers to look at are the Alarm Controls 1200WP Series weather resistant magnetic locks and the Dortronics 1000 Series industrial magnetic lock, which is described with sealed electronics and weather resistant construction and runs 12/24VDC field selectable. The Dortronics 1000 Series also carries an SPDT door position switch, the same switch type the MG Series DT model options use for door status.
7) I need delayed egress on the opening, not just a mag lock with a relock timer. What do I order?
The MG Series DT model options provide a door status sensor and a 0 to 90 second relock delay timer, which is relock timing after the lock is released, not delayed egress. For a true delayed egress opening the peers are the Alarm Controls 1200DE Series delayed egress magnetic lock for a single door and the DynaLock 2101 Series 1200 lb early warning lock. Both are single door units built around the egress delay function rather than the standard hold and release cycle.
8) Which magnetic locks are direct replacements when I am pulling out an older Locknetics 390 unit?
The Schlage Electronics M390RFK is described as a direct retrofit for the Locknetics 390+, rated 1500 lbs holding force with door status monitor, magnetic bond sensor and relock time delay, and is listed as heavy duty in the M390 Series. The MG Series covers the same door status and relock timing functions through its DT model options with a door status SPDT switch and a 0 to 90 second relock delay, but at 600 lb or 1200 lb holding force and without a stated retrofit hole pattern to the 390 series, so the M390RFK is the one to specify when reusing the existing 390+ prep.
9) Is a shear lock or a mortise mag lock the same thing as the MG Series surface mag lock?
No. The MG Series is a surface mounted electromagnetic lock. The ROFU 8031-002 is a shear lock rated at 2200 lb holding force, 12/24VDC and monitored, and the Schlage Electronics 320M is a compact mortise sliding door electromagnetic lock at 1500 lb. Shear and mortise units are concealed into the door and frame and prepped into the opening rather than surface mounted to the header, so they are not a drop-in for a surface mag lock even though all three are electromagnetic locks. The ROFU 8031-002 does share the MG Series dual 12/24VDC input.
10) Does a magnetic lock alternative to the MG Series exist that is rated for a fire door opening?
The MG Series is UL10C and UL294 listed. Among the peers, the Dorma EML310 single door units and the EML320 double door unit are the ones that carry a fire rating in their specs, all three at 1500 lb and all listed as electrically locked fail safe, which is the same fail safe function the MG Series uses.
11) I need more than 1200 lb of holding force on the opening. What are my options?
The MG Series tops out at the MG1200 model. For higher holding force the peers are the Dorma EML310 single door and EML320 double door units at 1500 lb, the Schlage Electronics M390RFK at 1500 lbs, the Schlage Electronics 320M compact mortise sliding door unit at 1500 lbs, and the ROFU 8031-002 shear lock at 2200 LB. The 320M is a mortise unit for sliding doors and the 8031-002 is a shear lock, so those two change the door prep as well as the force.
12) Should I pick the 600 lb or the 1200 lb MG maglock?
Holding force follows the traffic and the abuse, not the door weight. 600 lb suits interior openings with light to moderate pull, office suites, stairwell doors, back-of-house. 1200 lb is what to specify on a main entry, a public corridor, or anywhere the door gets yanked, and it's what most commercial specs call for by default. Both are offered in standard and monitored, and both are the same slim surface mount profile, so stepping up doesn't change the install.
13) How does an MG Series maglock mount, and does the door have to be prepped?
Surface mount. The magnet body goes on the frame at the head and the armature on the door, so there's no mortising into the door edge and no bore work. That's the practical reason maglocks get used on retrofit openings where you don't want to cut the existing door. If you need a lock that hides inside the frame or works on a sliding door instead, ZenSupply carries the Schlage Electronics 320M compact mortise sliding door electromagnetic lock.
14) What else can I buy if 1200 lb double maglock isn't enough holding force?
The step up in ZenSupply's line is the Dorma EML320 double door electromagnetic lock at 1500 lb, fail safe and fire rated. For a single leaf at 1500 lb there's the Dorma EML310. And if the opening is better served by a shear lock than a surface magnet, the ROFU 8031-002 shear lock runs 2200 lb at 12/24VDC, monitored. Shear locks mount concealed in the head and hold on both swing directions, which surface magnets do not.
15) Which alternatives to the MG Series carry a bond sensor to confirm the magnet is actually holding?
The MG Series monitored model reports door position through an SPDT door status switch, which tells you whether the door is open or closed. A bond sensor reports whether the magnet has achieved full holding contact, which is a separate signal. Peers that carry it are the Dorma EML310 BA DP, a single door 1500 lb unit with bond alert and door position sensor, and the Schlage Electronics M390RFK, which lists a magnetic bond sensor alongside its door status monitor.
16) What is a lighter duty alternative to a 600 lb magnetic lock for an interior door?
The Schlage M420 from the M400 Series is a single door electromagnetic lock rated at 500 lb holding force, below the 600 lb entry point of the MG600. The Dortronics 1107 in the 1100 Series is a narrow 2 inch slim line 600 lb single door mag lock, which matches the MG600 holding force in a narrow profile housing. Both are single door units, so a pair of doors would take two of them rather than one double unit.
17) What finish does the Locknetics MG Series maglock come in?
630 satin stainless steel (US32D) is the finish, and it's the only one offered across all four model and holding force combinations. That's the standard commercial stainless finish, so it lines up with 630 exit devices, closers and pulls already on most institutional openings without a special order.
18) Is a Locknetics MG maglock rated for commercial use or is it a residential product?
Commercial. The MG Series is built for commercial openings, runs off building power rather than batteries, and is an electronic lock that needs to be wired to an access control system or a power supply with a release device. There is no standalone keypad or battery option in it, so it's not a drop-in for a residential door where you want a self-contained lock.
