SDC E600 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the SDC E600 electromagnetic lock work on a pair of double doors?
Single swing doors only. The E600 is specified for a swing, single door type, so a pair of doors needs two magnets, one per leaf, each with its own armature and its own run of wire back to the power supply and access control. Do not plan on one E600 covering both leaves.
2) Does the E600 mag lock unlock on a fire alarm or power failure?
It does. The E600 is a fail-safe device, meaning it releases the door the moment power is removed, whether that is a fire alarm relay dropping power, a power failure, or a request-to-exit. That is the required behavior for an egress door and it is why the lock carries a UL 864 listing for control units and accessories for fire alarm systems. It also means the E600 gives you no security at all during an outage, so if you need the opening to stay locked without power, a magnet is the wrong device and you want a fail-secure electric strike or electrified lockset.
3) Can I monitor whether the door is actually closed and locked with the SDC E600?
Both, and they are separate signals. Door Position Status (DPS) tells your panel whether the door is physically closed, and Bond Alert Status (BAS) tells you whether the magnet has actually bonded to the armature, which catches the door that looks shut but is not pulled up tight. An LED on the lock body shows the same state at the opening for a tech standing there. For a security integrator this is the difference between knowing a door is closed and knowing it is secure, and both outputs land on the internal terminal block.
4) How does the SDC E600 mount, and does it need to be cut into the door?
Surface mounted, no mortising. The magnet body goes on the frame header and the armature on the door, using an interlocking quick mount assembly with an adjustable bracket so you can shift position to line the armature up. Wiring runs into an internal chamber to a terminal block rather than hanging out of the body. That makes it a retrofit-friendly device on an existing opening, since nothing gets machined into the door leaf.
5) Should I use a magnetic lock like the SDC E600 or an electric strike on my access control door?
A magnet like the E600 is the choice when you do not want to modify the door or frame and the opening must release on alarm. It surface mounts, holds 600 lbs, and drops open on loss of power. An electric strike is the choice when the door has to stay locked during a power failure or when you want to keep the existing mechanical lockset doing the latching, but it means frame prep. The other thing a magnet demands is egress hardware: the E600 has no mechanical latch, so the opening needs a request-to-exit device and whatever release the local code requires for that occupancy.
6) Will the SDC E600 magnet stick to the door after power is cut?
No. The E600 has anti-residual magnetism and instant release circuitry, so the magnet lets go cleanly instead of holding a few pounds of residual grab that makes the door feel stuck on egress. The same board carries voltage and current spike protection, which is what keeps the coil surviving a noisy supply or a relay-switched circuit.
7) What is the SDC E600 made of and how does it look on a finished opening?
Aluminum body in a low profile housing, which is a flatter and less obtrusive line above the door than the traditional stainless epoxy-sealed magnet. On a lobby or tenant-facing opening where an architect is looking at the header, that matters. It is the value-engineered magnet in SDC's Excel Series, so you are trading some of the bulk and premium housing of a full-size mag for cost and a cleaner sightline, not giving up the monitoring outputs.
