SDC 1581V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an SDC 1580 Series maglock work on a pair of doors, or do I need one per leaf?
Both are covered by the same series. The 1581 is the single EMLock for one leaf; the 1582 is the double EMLock, one housing spanning a pair. Either way it is a surface mounted unit on a swing door, single or double. So for a double door opening you order the 1582 rather than two 1581s.
2) What happens to an SDC 1580 maglock when the power drops?
It unlocks. The 1580 Series is fail-safe, so cutting power releases the magnet and the door opens. Anti-residual magnetism circuitry drops the bond immediately instead of leaving the armature stuck to the housing. That behaviour is what makes it usable on an egress door, and it also means the lock gives you no security at all during a power outage unless it is on backup power.
3) What options do I have to specify when ordering an SDC 1580 Series EMLock?
Five switch and indicator options, each an independent yes or no on the order: anti-tamper switch (ATS), bond alert status (BAS), door position switch (DPS), relock time delay (RTD) and a visual status indicator LED. Then pick the model, 1581 single or 1582 double, and a finish. If you want the panel to know the door is closed and the magnet is actually bonded, that is DPS plus BAS, and those are the two most commonly missed at order time.
4) Does an SDC EMLock carry the certifications I need for a code compliant egress door?
The 1580 Series is listed to UL 1034, UL 10B and 10C, ULC-S104 and S533, ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 1, and is CSFM listed under 3774-0324:100. That set is what a specifier or an AHJ typically wants to see on a magnetic lock in a healthcare, education or government facility, and the fail-safe release is part of the same code story.
5) What is the difference between the RTD relock time delay option and delayed egress on an SDC maglock?
They solve different problems. Relock time delay (RTD) is an ordering option that holds the magnet off for a short period after a valid release so the door has time to swing and close before the magnet re-energizes, which stops the lock grabbing a door that is still moving. Delayed egress is the application the 1580 Series is built for, holding the door briefly after someone pushes on it before releasing on the egress path. If you are only trying to stop nuisance relocking on a busy door, RTD is the box to tick.
6) Can I add a door position switch to an SDC EMLock later, or do I have to order it up front?
Order it up front if you know you need it. DPS is a build option on the 1581 and 1582 rather than a field accessory. The series does use a patented modular design that allows upgrades and maintenance without removing the unit from the frame, and the EZ mount interlocking assembly holds the housing while you wire, so service work does not mean pulling the header apart.
7) Can an SDC 1581 maglock replace a Locknetics 392 magnetic lock?
The 1581 is the single leaf EMLock in SDC's 1580 Series and it is the part buyers cross reference against the Locknetics 392. Both are surface mounted magnetic locks for swing doors. Confirm the header mounting pattern and the available strike location on your opening before you swap, since a maglock retrofit lives or dies on whether the existing bracket and armature prep line up.
8) Should I use a magnetic lock or an electric strike on a controlled exit door?
A maglock like the SDC 1580 Series is the choice when you want the door held shut with no mechanical latch involvement and you need it to release the instant power drops, which is what the fail-safe design and delayed egress application call for. An electric strike works with the existing lockset and keeps mechanical security when power fails, but it does nothing for a door with no latch and it will not give you delayed egress on its own. Surface mounted swing doors, single or double, are the 1580's territory.
9) What finishes does the SDC 1580 Series maglock come in, and will it match my other door hardware?
Six architectural finishes: 335 dull black, 605 bright brass, 625 bright chrome, 626 dull chrome, 628 dull aluminum and 710 dark bronze. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so 626 and 628 will read alongside the satin chrome and clear anodized hardware already on most commercial openings. The housing is plated or anodized on all sides rather than only on the visible face.
10) Is the SDC 1580 EMLock housing metal, and will it hold up in a school or hospital corridor?
Aluminum housing, finished on all sides, built for commercial rather than residential duty. It is specified into healthcare access control, educational safety systems, government buildings, retail loss prevention and industrial monitoring. Because the lock holds magnetically with no moving latch or strike to wear, the failure points on a high traffic corridor door are the wiring and the armature fasteners rather than the lock body.
