Metallics BFR17 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hole does the Metallics BFR17 masonry bit drill, and what chuck does it fit?
The BFR17 is a 3/8 inch diameter carbide-tipped masonry bit with a 1/4 inch shank, so it drops into any 1/4 inch or larger drill chuck, including a standard 3/8 inch keyless chuck. Overall length is 6 inches. The 3/8 inch diameter is the hole size for 3/8 inch sleeve anchors, wedge anchors and many masonry strap or clamp fasteners.
2) Can I use the BFR17 masonry bit in a hammer drill or does it need an SDS rotary hammer?
It is a straight 1/4 inch round shank, not SDS-plus, so it goes in a standard drill or a hammer-drill in hammer mode, not in an SDS rotary hammer. The slow spiral carbide design is built for concrete, block and brick in a hammer-drill setup. If your tool is SDS-only, you need an SDS bit or an SDS-to-chuck adapter instead.
3) Will a carbide masonry bit like this drill through steel or wood?
No. The BFR17 is carbide tipped with a slow spiral flute, ground for masonry: concrete, brick, block and mortar. Carbide masonry tips have a blunt, chisel-style geometry that will not cut steel and will tear and burn wood. Use a HSS twist bit for metal and a brad point or auger for wood.
4) Is the Metallics BFR17 sold individually or in a multi-pack?
One bit per order. The BFR17 ships as a single piece in a pouch, so if you are stocking a van or a maintenance crib you order the quantity you need rather than getting a set.
5) What is the point of a slow spiral masonry bit versus a fast spiral?
Slow spiral means a shallower flute pitch, which puts more carbide and web behind the tip. That trades dust-clearing speed for durability under hammer impact, which is what you want in hard concrete and aggregate. Fast spiral bits clear dust quicker and suit softer brick and block. The BFR17 is the slow spiral type at 3/8 inch diameter.
