The BFR9 drills a 5/32 inch hole. Its shank is also 5/32 inch, so the bit runs the same diameter top to bottom rather than stepping down to a reduced shank.
2) Is a carbide tipped slow spiral bit like the BFR9 the right choice for drilling concrete and brick, or should I use a regular twist bit?
For concrete, block, brick and mortar, the carbide tipped slow spiral is the right tool. The brazed carbide tip survives the percussive action a hammer drill puts into masonry, and the slow (wide pitch) spiral clears the powdered dust that masonry produces instead of packing it in the hole. A standard high speed steel twist bit is made for metal and wood and will dull almost immediately in concrete. Conversely, do not use this bit for steel or sheet metal work.
