Rim & Mortise Cylinders

Medeco® Mortise cylinders have threads on the outside of the shell and are designed to be screwed into other manufacturer's mortise lock cases. A cam on the back of the cylinder operates the lock mechanism and a set screw holds the mortise cylinder in place.

Rim cylinders are used with auxiliary rim locks such as: surface mounted deadbolts, night latches, panic devices and jimmyproof locks (also know as vertical dropbolts or interlocking deadbolts). Rim cylinders are held in place with a back plate and two mounting screws.

High Security rim and mortise cylinders, are UL437 listed for drill and pick resistance, and the those that incorporate the Medeco 4 (M4) design offer utility patented key control.

Rim and Mortise cylinders can be ordered with a variety of different cylinder technologies, including the features below for Medeco 4 (M4).

Features

  • Patented Key Control - Protects against unauthorized duplication of your keys.
  • Uses Existing Hardware - M4 cylinders are available in a wide variety of formats, retrofitting most hardware on the market today.
  • Can Be Masterkeyed - Can be masterkeyed into a system containing M4 BiLevel.
  • Protection From Physical Attack - M4 cylinders are UL 437 listed and stand up to drilling, picking and other forms of physical attack.
  • Special Angle Cut Keys - Requires a special key cutting machine and access to Medeco specific blanks, available in a variety of restrictions to support every need.
  • Picking & Bump Protection - M4 cylinders use a sidebar that prevents the key from rotating until it is elevated, rotated and aligned in the correct position.  This feature offers protection against bumping and picking attacks.

Medeco MED-100300H-26-00P-Y02 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a rim cylinder and a mortise cylinder, and which one do I need?
Rim cylinders mount to surface-applied auxiliary locks: surface deadbolts, night latches, panic devices, and jimmyproof (interlocking deadbolt / vertical dropbolt) locks. They are held on by a back plate and two mounting screws, and a tailpiece passes through the door to drive the lock. Mortise cylinders are the threaded type that screws into a mortise lock case, driving the lock through a cam and held by a set screw in the lock edge. If the lock body sits on the inside face of the door, you want the rim cylinder. If the lock is buried in a pocket in the door edge, you need a mortise cylinder instead.
2) Horizontal or vertical tailpiece on a Medeco rim cylinder, how do I know which to order?
The tailpiece orientation has to match the drive slot on the lock the cylinder feeds. Medeco 5 pin rim cylinders are ordered with either a horizontal or a vertical tailpiece, and the tailpiece part itself is specified as CT-Y02 or CT-Y32. Pull the existing cylinder and look at the flat bar on the back: if it lies flat side to side with the cylinder upright it is horizontal, if it stands on edge it is vertical. Panic device manufacturers differ on this, so match what came out of the door rather than guessing.
3) Are Medeco high security rim cylinders UL 437 listed for drill and pick resistance?
Yes. Medeco high security rim and mortise cylinders are UL 437 listed for drill and pick resistance, and the M4 cylinders add a sidebar that keeps the key from rotating until each pin is elevated, rotated and aligned, which is what defeats picking and bump attacks. On the spec side these are Grade 1, heavy duty, commercial rated cylinders in a brass shell. That combination is what a facility spec asking for a high security cylinder is usually calling out.
4) Which Medeco key technology should I order if I already have Medeco cylinders in the building?
Order the technology that matches your existing system, or the keys will not interchange. The 5 pin rim cylinder is built in Original, Biaxial, M3, Bilevel, and KeyMark. These are distinct keyway platforms, so a Biaxial key will not operate an M3 cylinder. Look at the key bow stamp or your keying records for the system you are already on, and specify that. If you are starting fresh across a property, pick one technology and stay on it so every future cylinder can be masterkeyed into the same system.
5) Can I get Medeco rim cylinders keyed alike across a set of doors, or keyed to my existing key code?
All three ways. Keyed different gives every cylinder its own key, keyed alike puts one key on the whole group (the usual choice when a property manager wants one key for a run of exterior doors), and key code lets you specify an existing code so new cylinders operate the keys already in the field. Medeco cylinders can also be masterkeyed into a system containing M4 BiLevel, which is how a facility keeps a master over individually keyed doors.
6) What is a simpler replacement rim cylinder if patented key control is not needed?
The Kaba Ilco 605 Series is a 5 pin replacement rim cylinder in a satin brass finish, sold in packs of ten. Like the Medeco 100300 rim cylinder it is a 5 pin cylinder, but the Medeco is offered in Original, Biaxial, Bilevel, KeyMark and M3 key technologies with UL 437 listed drill and pick resistance and utility patented key control on the M4 design. The Ilco 605 is the plain replacement route for openings where the sidebar, angle-cut keys and restricted blanks of a Medeco system are not part of the plan; the Medeco is the route when key duplication has to be controlled.
7) What is the difference between pinned and sub-assembled Medeco cylinders?
Pinned means the cylinder arrives loaded to a keying assignment and ready to install. Sub-assembled means it comes without the final pinning, for a locksmith or in-house shop that pins and keys it themselves on their own Medeco system. If you do not have a Medeco key machine and blanks, order pinned. Medeco keys use special angle cuts that need a specific key cutting machine and access to Medeco blanks, so sub-assembled only makes sense if you already run that capability.
8) I need a rim cylinder that is just a dummy or a thumbturn instead of keyed, what are my options?
A keyed Medeco 5 pin rim cylinder is not the part for that. For a non-keyed hole filler, the Kaba Ilco 7010 is a 1-1/8 inch (28.6mm) dummy rim cylinder. For inside turn operation, the Kaba Ilco 7011 is a 1-1/8 inch turnknob rim cylinder, and the ADA 7011 is the turn version in the same size. Those are the right call on an interior leaf or an egress side where nobody should need a key.
9) Do I really need a Medeco cylinder, or will a standard replacement rim cylinder do the job?
It comes down to key control and attack resistance. The Medeco 5 pin rim cylinder is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial cylinder, UL 437 listed against drilling and picking, with utility patented key control on M4 so keys cannot be duplicated at a hardware store. If the door does not need that, the Kaba Ilco 605 Series 5 pin replacement rim cylinder is a straightforward keyed replacement, sold in satin brass by the 10. A common approach on a property is Medeco on perimeter and equipment room doors and standard cylinders on interior openings.
10) Is the Kaba Ilco 7010 rim cylinder an alternative to a keyed Medeco rim cylinder?
No. The Ilco 7010 is a 1-1/8 inch (28.6mm) dummy rim cylinder, a dummy function that fills the cylinder hole for appearance and does not operate a lock mechanism. The Medeco 100300 is a pinned 5 pin rim cylinder that keys an auxiliary rim lock such as a surface mounted deadbolt, night latch, panic device or jimmyproof lock. Order the 7010 only when the prep needs to be covered on a door leaf that is not locked from that point.
11) For standardizing rim cylinders across a facility, what separates the Medeco 100300 from the Ilco 605 series?
The Medeco 100300 rim cylinder is a Grade 1, heavy duty, commercial brass cylinder offered in thirteen finishes from 605 bright brass through 626 satin chrome, in five key technologies, and it can be masterkeyed into a system containing M4 BiLevel. The Kaba Ilco 605 Series is a 5 pin replacement rim cylinder supplied in satin brass and sold by tens. A facility standardizing on one keyway across many doors with a masterkey hierarchy and matching finishes across mixed hardware works from the Medeco range; a straight like-for-like cylinder swap in quantity works from the Ilco 605.
12) What finishes do Medeco rim cylinders come in to match the rest of my door hardware?
Thirteen, covering the standard commercial range: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 dark bronze oil-rubbed, 624 dark bronze, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 20 antique nickel, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. On most commercial openings 626 satin chrome and 613 oil-rubbed bronze are the two that match existing exit device and lever trim.
13) How many pins does this Medeco rim cylinder have, and does pin count matter for masterkeying?
Five pins. That is the standard chamber count for a rim cylinder of this size and it is what most Medeco commercial systems are built on. Pin count has to be consistent within a masterkey system, so if your existing Medeco cylinders are 5 pin, stay with 5 pin when you add doors. Mixing chamber counts inside one system is how a master key stops working on half a building.
