1) Will this Advance 50W ballast run my metal halide lamp, or do I need to match the ANSI code?
Match the ANSI code. The Advance 71A5181001D is built for 50W metal halide lamps carrying ANSI code M110, one lamp per ballast. If the lamp on the fixture label says anything other than M110, this is not the right ballast for it, even at the same 50 watts.
2) Can I use this ballast on both 120V and 277V circuits?
Yes. It is a dual voltage ballast rated 120/277V at 60 Hz, so the same part works on a 120V branch circuit in a retail space or a 277V circuit in a warehouse. You land the appropriate voltage lead per the ballast wiring diagram; the unused tap is capped off.
3) Is this a pulse start or probe start ballast?
Pulse start. The 50W M110 ballast uses an igniter to strike the lamp rather than a probe start electrode, which gives quicker ignition and longer lamp life. Probe start lamps will not operate correctly on it, so the lamp you install has to be a pulse start type matching M110.
4) Will this fit inside my existing fixture housing or pole base?
The core assembly measures 3.94 x 2.81 x 2.10 inches and weighs 4.88 lbs. Check the clear space in the ballast compartment against those numbers, and make sure the mounting bracket or tray can carry roughly five pounds before you reuse an old housing.
5) Will this ballast dim with a wall dimmer or a lighting control system?
No. This is a non-dimmable magnetic HID ballast, full output only, with a ballast factor of 1. For controlled areas, switch the circuit or use occupancy control on the whole fixture rather than trying to dim it.
6) Does the Advance 50W HID ballast kit come with the capacitor, or do I order that separately?
It is supplied as a kit built around a 6 MFD capacitor rating. When replacing only the capacitor on an existing install, that 6 MFD value is the one to match, along with the correct voltage rating for the cap.
7) Is this ballast rated for outdoor parking lot and area lighting?
It is intended for outdoor installations as well as indoor commercial work, including parking structures, area lighting and warehouse fixtures. The ballast itself is not a weatherproof enclosure, so it has to be mounted inside the fixture housing or pole base that provides the wet location protection.
8) Does a 0.9 power factor matter for my panel loading?
It does if you are sizing a branch circuit for a row of fixtures. At 0.9 power factor the ballast draws noticeably less current than a low power factor unit at the same 50W lamp load, so more fixtures fit per circuit and reactive load on the panel stays down.
