1) What do the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 position options mean on a Milbank U8032-XL ringless meter socket?
Positions is the number of metered positions in the enclosure, and the model number tracks it: U8032-XL is 2 position, U8033-XL is 3, U8034-XL is 4, U8035-XL is 5, U8036-XL is 6. Each position is a 4 terminal, 1 phase, 100 amp socket. So a six unit apartment building on single phase service gets the 6 position U8036-XL rather than six separate single sockets. All positions are 300V AC, 60 Hz rated.
2) Does the Milbank U8032-XL multi-position meter socket include main breakers or a main disconnect?
No. These are meter sockets only, with zero main breakers and no main breaker provision. You supply the disconnecting means and overcurrent protection separately, either a main breaker in each tenant panel or a separate service disconnect ahead of the panels, whichever your utility and inspector require. There are also no receptacles built into the enclosure. If you need metering and disconnects in one assembly, you want a meter main or a meter pack with integral breakers instead of the U80xx-XL.
3) What is the difference between the KK, BL and BLG suffixes on Milbank U8033-XL meter sockets?
They are the bypass and utility lock options, and your serving utility usually dictates which one you order. Plain U8033-XL has no bypass and no barrel lock provision. Adding KK gives horn bypass, which lets the meter be pulled without dropping power to the tenant. KK-BL is horn bypass plus a 9/16 inch barrel lock provision, and KK-BLG is horn bypass plus a 7/8 inch barrel lock provision. Call the utility before you order, since barrel lock diameter is their spec, not yours. Note the 6 position group offers plain, KK and KK-BLG, without the 9/16 inch barrel lock version.
4) Can I bring the service into a Milbank U8034-XL from underground, or is it overhead only?
Either. The U80xx-XL sockets are set up for overhead or underground cable entry. They ship with a small closing plate at the hub opening, so for an overhead drop you remove the plate and install the hub your utility specifies, and for an underground lateral you leave the closing plate in place and bring the conductors in through the bottom. The hub itself is not part of the socket, so order it separately if you are going overhead.
5) Will a 100 amp Milbank ringless socket work on a 120/240V single phase residential service?
Yes. These are 1 phase units rated 300 volts AC at 60 hertz, which covers a standard 120/240V single phase service, and each position is rated 100 continuous amperes. A 4 terminal socket is the single phase configuration. If the building is on three phase service, or any individual tenant needs more than 100 amps, this is the wrong socket.
6) Can a Milbank ringless meter socket be mounted outdoors on an exterior wall?
Yes. The U80xx-XL sockets are Type 3R rated and UL Listed, so they are built for outdoor wall mounting where rain, sleet and ice are expected. The enclosure is G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish, and the internal insulation is glass polyester. Mounting is surface mount, so it fastens flat to the wall or a structure rather than recessing into it. Type 3R is not a washdown or submersion rating, so keep it out of locations subject to direct hose spray.
7) Does a ringless meter socket need a meter sealing ring, and will the utility's ring-type meter still fit?

On a multi-position socket serving an apartment or strip retail building, that matters, because a meter change or test on one position otherwise means an outage for that unit. If the utility handles all meter work and never asks for it, the plain no-bypass version is the shorter part number. Barrel lock provision is a separate decision on top of bypass, in 9/16 inch or 7/8 inch.
9) Is there a grounding lug in the Milbank U8032-XL meter socket or do I add a ground bar?
