Milbank M400-UG-APS-LC-BS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size wire can I land in the load side lugs of a Milbank M400 meter socket?
Load side terminals take 1 AWG through 300 kcmil, single mechanical lugs. That covers the parallel or single large conductors typical of a 320 amp class service. If your engineer specced a conductor above 300 kcmil, it will not land here and you need to size the run to stay inside that range or use a separate tap arrangement.
2) Can a Milbank M400 meter socket be recessed into the wall instead of surface mounted?
Two versions are built flush mount: M400-UG-APS-F and M400-UG-APS-F-BS, both ring type with a plain top and 4 circuits, the BS version adding link bypass. The remaining configurations are surface mount. Flush is what you want on a finished stucco or brick face where the enclosure sits in the wall cavity; decide this before rough-in, because you cannot convert one to the other in the field.
3) Do I need ringless or ring type for my utility, and does the Milbank M400 come both ways?
Both. The utility dictates this, so confirm with them before you order. The M400-PAR-UG is ringless with a plain top. Every other configuration is ring type, including M400-APS with a small open hub and M400-UG-APS-LC with a plain top. Ordering the wrong style is the most common reason a socket gets rejected at inspection or refused a meter set.
4) What is link bypass on a Milbank M400 and do I need it?
Link bypass lets the meter be pulled without dropping power to the load, which many utilities require on 320 amp class services so they can change a meter hot. Four M400 configurations carry it: M400-APS-BS, M400-UG-APS-F-BS, M400-UG-APS-LC-BS, and the rest ship without. If your utility spec sheet calls for bypass, order a BS suffix version; if it does not, the non-bypass version is the simpler part.
5) Which Milbank M400 gives me a load center with breaker spaces instead of just a few circuits?
Two of them. The M400-UG-APS-LC and M400-UG-APS-LC-BS are 24 circuit combination units, the LC-BS version adding link bypass and dual 200A breakers. Everything else in the M400 range is a 4 circuit configuration. If you are feeding a house panel plus outbuildings and want the distribution in the meter enclosure, take a 24 circuit version; if the socket is only feeding a separate main panel, a 4 circuit unit is what you want.
6) Is the Milbank M400 for overhead or underground service entrance?
Mostly underground. The UG configurations, M400-PAR-UG, M400-UG-APS-F, M400-UG-APS-F-BS, M400-UG-APS-LC, M400-UG-APS-LC-BS and M400-UG-APS-P, have plain tops with no hub opening, which is how an underground lateral comes in from below. The M400-APS and M400-APS-BS have a small open hub in the top for an overhead service mast. Match the version to how the utility is bringing power to the building.
7) How does a 320 amp meter socket with dual 200A breakers work, and why not one 400 amp main?
The M400-UG-APS-LC-BS uses two 200 amp breakers rather than a single main. That is the standard way a 320 continuous amp class service is built: the utility rates the socket 320 continuous, and the load is split across two 200 amp feeds, typically one to the house panel and one to a second panel, shop or subpanel. Each leg has to be separately fed and sized on its own, you are not landing one 400 amp feeder.
8) Is the Milbank M400 meter socket UL Listed for permitted work?
Yes, the M400 is UL Listed and rated Type 3R. That is what an inspector looks for on a service entrance socket, along with the utility's own approval of the socket style. UL Listing alone does not satisfy the utility, most serving utilities keep an approved socket list and the ring or ringless style has to match theirs.
9) What is the pullout fused version of the Milbank M400 for?
The M400-UG-APS-P is a ring type, plain top, 4 circuit unit with pullout fuse holders instead of breakers. Pullout fused units are used where the utility or the local jurisdiction wants a fused disconnect ahead of the panel, and where the owner is comfortable stocking replacement fuses rather than resetting a breaker. If you want resettable protection, take a breaker configuration instead.
10) What insulation is behind the meter jaws on a Milbank M400, and does it matter for a hot climate?
Glass polyester insulation carries the jaw assembly. It is a thermoset material with good thermal stability, which matters on a 320 continuous amp socket sitting in direct sun on a south wall, where a lower grade insulator can distort under sustained heat and load. Combined with the G90 galvanized steel enclosure and powder coat, it is built for long term outdoor service.
11) Does the Milbank M400 meter socket have any receptacles built in?
No. The M400 has zero receptacles. If the job needs a GFCI convenience outlet at the service, for a well pump controller, a job trailer, or an RV feed, that is a separate device and enclosure. Buyers standardizing service equipment across a portfolio should note this, since some competing meter pedestal products bundle an outlet and this socket does not.
