1) What size conductors can I land in the Milbank PB-014 termination box?
Load side lugs on the PB-014 take 4 AWG through 600 kcmil, and they're rated for both copper and aluminum, so you can pull in aluminum URD or copper service conductors without changing lugs. Line side is a 1/2 inch stud connection. That range covers most 400 amp underground services, including parallel-free single 600 kcmil runs.
2) Can a Milbank underground termination box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The PB-014 is a Type 3R enclosure in G90 galvanized steel with an ANSI 61 grey powder coat, which is the standard outdoor rating for rain, sleet and ice on a service pedestal or building exterior wall. Type 3R is not a submersible or hosedown rating, so it isn't for a below-grade vault or a washdown area.
3) What is the difference between the PB-014 and PB-014-NK?
Knockouts. The PB-014 ships with knockouts already provided; the PB-014-NK is the no-knockout version, a blank box you punch yourself where the conduit actually lands. If your conduit stub-up is already in the ground and won't line up with factory knockouts, order the NK and cut to suit. Everything else, 400A, 600V, Type 3R, single position, is the same on both.
4) Does the Milbank PB-014 have enough short circuit rating for a 400A service?
It carries a 50,000 ampere short circuit rating at up to 600V AC, which covers the available fault current on most commercial and multi-family services fed from a pad-mount transformer. If your utility gives you an available fault current above 50 kA at the terminals, this box is not the right enclosure for that point in the system.
5) Is this a meter socket or just a termination box?
It's a termination cabinet, not a meter socket. The PB-014 is a single position line to load distribution box: underground conductors come in, land on lugs, and feed out. There is no meter jaw assembly and no metering provision. If you need the utility to meter at this point, you want a meter socket or a meter pedestal instead.
6) Will the Milbank PB-014 work on a three phase service?
No. The PB-014 is a single phase box with one conductor position per termination. For a three phase underground service you need a three phase termination cabinet or a multi-position trough, not this one.
7) Do I need to order separate lugs for the Milbank PB-014 termination box?
No separate lugs needed on the load side. The box comes with 4 AWG to 600 kcmil load side lugs already installed, rated for copper or aluminum.
