1) Will a Milbank underground termination box handle a 800A three-phase service, or is it limited to 400A?
Both. The Milbank underground termination box is ordered at either 400A or 800A, three-phase, so an 800A commercial underground feed is covered without stepping outside the family. Pick the ampere rating on the order form; the rest of the box (600V AC, Type 3R, G90 galvanized steel) is the same either way.
2) What size conductors will land in the lugs of a Milbank 600V termination box?
Load side lugs take 4 AWG through 600 kcmil, and the line side is a 1/2 inch stud connection. The lugs are rated for both copper and aluminum, so an aluminum underground feeder terminates directly with no separate transition. If your feeder runs larger than 600 kcmil per phase you are into parallel sets, and each parallel run has to land in its own lug position.
3) Should I order the Milbank termination box with knockouts or without?
Knockout is a real ordering choice here, and it decides how you get conduit into the box. Order the no-knockout version when you want to punch or hole-saw your own openings exactly where the underground conduit and the load-side raceway come up, which is the usual call on a field-routed underground feed. Order the knockout version when you want factory openings and can lay out the conduit to suit them. Both knockout options exist at 400A and at 800A.
4) Can a Milbank underground termination box be mounted outdoors, or does it need to be inside?
Outdoor mounting is what it is built for. The enclosure is Type 3R, which is the rating for rain, sleet, snow and ice on outdoor equipment, and the shell is G90 galvanized steel finished in ANSI 61 gray powder coat. Type 3R is not a washdown or hosedown rating, so it is not the box for a location that gets pressure-sprayed.
5) What short circuit current rating does the Milbank underground termination box carry?
50,000 amperes. That matters because the box has to be rated at or above the available fault current at its point on the system, and on a 600V underground service fed from a utility transformer that number gets checked on the fault study. If your engineer's calculated available fault current at that location exceeds 50 kA, this box does not satisfy the requirement.
6) Is a termination cabinet the same thing as a meter socket or a panelboard?
No, and mixing them up is a common ordering mistake. A termination cabinet is a pull and splice point: line conductors land on studs, load conductors land on lugs, and power passes through. There is no meter, no main breaker, and no branch circuits inside. Use it where an underground service or feeder has to be terminated and transitioned before it reaches gear. If you need metering or overcurrent protection at that point, you need a meter socket or a panelboard instead.
7) Is the Milbank 600V termination box UL Listed for a permitted commercial job?
