1) Does the Milbank U2124 meter socket include a main breaker or disconnect?
No. The U2124 is a meter socket only, with no main breaker and no receptacles. You'll need a separate main breaker panel or disconnect downstream to complete a 320A service. The socket does include a lever bypass so the meter can be pulled without dropping load, plus a 2 barrel ground lug for the equipment grounding conductor.
2) Will this Milbank 320A socket work for overhead service, or is it underground only?
Underground only. The U2124 is built with underground cable entry, so service conductors come up through the bottom. For an overhead drop you need a socket with a top hub or weatherhead entry instead, not this one. It's a single position, single phase socket rated 600V AC at 60 Hz.
3) What's the difference between the U2124-O-HSP and the U2124-X versions?
Both are the same 320A ringless lever bypass socket; the difference is the top treatment. The U2124-O-HSP comes with a plain top and a stainless steel hasp for padlocking or utility sealing. The U2124-X comes with a large closing plate. Pick based on what your serving utility requires for top closure and sealing on an underground install.
4) Is the Milbank U2124 socket 4 jaw or 5 jaw, and what are the terminals?
It's a 4 terminal (4 jaw) socket, which is the normal configuration for single phase 120/240V residential and light commercial metering. Line and load connections land on 3/8 inch studs, so lugs sized for 320A service conductors bolt straight on. If your utility specs a 5 jaw socket for network or 120/208 service, this is not the right part.
5) Can the meter be pulled without killing power to the house?
Yes, that's what the lever bypass is for. Throwing the bypass lever carries service current around the meter socket jaws so the meter can be removed or swapped while the load stays energized. Useful for meter changeouts and testing on occupied properties where an outage means a callback.
6) Is this meter socket rated for outdoor installation and will it hold up in a coastal or wet location?
The enclosure is UL Listed and Type 3R, which is the rainproof outdoor rating utilities normally require for an exterior service. Construction is G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish for corrosion resistance, and internal insulation is glass polyester. Type 3R is rainproof, not submersible, so it should not be installed where it can be flooded.
7) What does ringless mean on a meter socket, and does it matter which one my utility accepts?
Ringless means the cover slides over the meter and is secured by the utility seal rather than by a locking ring around the meter rim. It matters a lot: most utilities specify one style or the other in their service manual and will refuse to set a meter on the wrong one. The U2124 is a ringless 320A socket, so confirm your serving utility's approved list calls for ringless before ordering.
8) Can I use a 320A meter socket to feed two 200A panels in a duplex?
The U2124 is a single position socket with one set of 4 terminals, so it meters one service only. A 320A continuous rated socket is commonly used ahead of two 200A disconnects on a single metered service, but it will not meter two separate tenants. For a duplex where each unit needs its own meter, you need a multi position (gang) socket instead.
