1) Will the Milbank UAP1797 meter socket work for a 320 amp / 400 amp class residential service?
The UAP1797 is rated 320 continuous amperes, single phase, 600 VAC, 60 Hz, with one meter position and 4 jaws. That is the standard rating utilities call a 400 amp class residential service, which is metered at 320 amps continuous. It has no main breaker and no receptacles, so overcurrent protection has to come from downstream panels or a separate disconnect.
2) Can this Milbank socket be used with overhead service drop, or is it underground only?
Underground entry. The UAP1797 is configured for below grade cable entry and ships with a plain top, meaning no hub opening for a service mast. If you are feeding from an overhead drop you need a socket with a hub or hub opening top instead.
3) What is the difference between the two Milbank UAP1797 versions?
Both are the same 320 amp ringless lever bypass socket. UAP1797-O-K3L-K2L is the standard build. UAP1797-O-K3L-K2L-BLG adds a 7/8 inch knockout and angle bracket for a utility barrel lock. If the serving utility requires a barrel lock on the cover, order the BLG version; retrofitting the bracket later is not something you want to be doing on an energized can.
4) How much wall space do I need for the Milbank UAP1797 meter socket?
Plan on 4.844 x 15 x 30 inches, with 30 inches the height and 15 inches the width. It is surface mount, so the 4.844 inch dimension is the depth it stands off the wall. Remember the NEC working space in front of the equipment on top of that.
5) Is this Milbank socket rated for outdoor mounting in weather?
Type 3R and UL Listed. That covers outdoor surface mounting against rain, sleet and snow, which is where a service socket normally lives. The enclosure is aluminum with a powder coat finish and the jaw insulation is glass polyester.
6) Does the Milbank UAP1797 come with a ground lug, or do I have to add a ground bar kit?
A 3 barrel ground lug is included for the equipment ground, so no separate ground bar kit is needed for a typical single service ground and bond. What is not included is overcurrent protection: with no main breaker in the can, you still need a disconnect or main breaker panel downstream.
7) What does ringless mean on this Milbank meter socket, and will my utility accept it?
Ringless means the cover itself secures over the meter instead of using a separate sealing ring, so there is no ring to install or seal. Utilities specify one or the other by territory and will not accept the wrong style. The UAP1797 is the ringless, 4 terminal, lever bypass, underground configuration; if your utility's approved list calls for ringed, you need a different can.
