1) What is the difference between the Milbank U2818-O-PSEG-DES and U2819-O-PSEG-DES meter sockets?
Terminal count is the difference. The U2818-O-PSEG-DES is the 8 terminal version and the U2819-O-PSEG-DES is the 13 terminal version. Everything else on the CT20 family socket is the same: ringless plain top, 20 continuous amp rating, 3 phase, 600V AC, Type 3R enclosure, single meter position. 2) Is this Milbank meter socket approved for PSE&G service in New Jersey?
It is built to the Public Service Electric and Gas New Jersey specification, which is what the PSEG-DES suffix on the U2818 and U2819 catalog numbers refers to. If you are metering outside PSE&G territory, check your serving utility's approved socket list before you buy, because utility-specific sockets are not interchangeable between service areas.
3) Why is a 20 amp meter socket rated for 600 volts? Does it handle my 400 amp service?
It does not carry the service current. This is a transformer rated (CT) socket, family code CT20, so the 20 continuous amp rating applies to the secondary current coming from the current transformers, not the load. The service conductors run through separate CTs in a CT cabinet; only the small metering leads land in this socket. That is also why the wire range on both line and load side is just 4 to 14 AWG.
4) Is this meter socket set up for overhead or underground service?
Underground. Cable entry is specified as underground, and the top is a plain top with no hub opening, so there is no provision for a service entrance mast or weatherhead conduit hub on top.
