That is set by your utility, not by the load. The U5872-XL-200 is the 4 terminal build; the U5872-XL-200-5T9 adds a 5th terminal in the 9 o'clock position. Utilities that require a fifth jaw for network metering or a specific transformer arrangement will reject a 4 terminal can, so check the utility's approved meter equipment list for your service address before ordering. Everything else, the 200A main, the 20 branch circuit spaces and the lever bypass, is the same on both.
2) Will 4/0 aluminum SE cable land on the line side of this Milbank 200A meter socket?
Yes. The line side terminals take 6 AWG through 350 kcmil, so 4/0 aluminum for a 200A service sits comfortably in that range, as does 2/0 copper. They are lay-in type terminals, which means you drop the conductor into the jaw and torque the lug rather than threading it through a closed barrel.
3) Can this Milbank combination meter socket be used for an underground service, or is it overhead only?
Both. Cable entry is rated for overhead or underground service. It ships with a small closing plate over the hub opening, so for an overhead drop you pull that plate and fit the meter hub your utility requires; the hub is a separate purchase. For an underground lateral you leave the closing plate in place and bring the conduit in through the bottom.
4) Is a 200A meter main with 20 branch circuits enough for a whole house, or do I still need a separate panel?
For most single family homes it is the whole job. The U5872-XL-200 combines the meter socket, a single 200A main breaker disconnect and a 20 space load center in one enclosure at 240V, single phase, 60 Hz, with a ground bar for equipment grounding. You run branch circuits straight out of it. Once you pass 20 circuits, or you need to feed a detached structure or a separate tenant, you would use one of those 20 spaces for a feeder breaker to a downstream subpanel.
5) How many meters does this Milbank unit serve? I need to meter two apartments.
One. The U5872-XL-200 has a single meter position, so it serves one metered service only. A duplex or any multi-tenant building that needs separately billed units requires a multi-position meter stack or a second single-position socket per unit, not this can. It does suit a multi-unit property where a single house service feeds the whole building.
6) What wall space do I need to mount a Milbank U5872 meter main?
Plan for a footprint of 14-1/8 inches wide by 33-1/2 inches tall, with 4-1/2 inches of projection off the wall. It is a surface mount enclosure, so it fastens to the exterior wall or a backboard rather than recessing into the framing. Remember that the meter face still has to land within the utility's required height window off finished grade, so set the top of the can accordingly.

Many utilities standardize on ringless and will not accept ring type, so match what is already on the block. The lever bypass lets the meter be pulled and swapped with the load still fed through the bypass, which is what makes meter changes possible without dropping power to the building. That matters on multi-unit residential and any tenant space where an outage is disruptive.
