Mulberry MUL30601 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Mulberry 30601 outlet box hold three devices with enough room for the wiring?
Yes. The 30601 is a 3-gang box with 59.8 cubic inches of interior volume, so you get three device positions plus room for splices and device connections behind a weatherproof cover. That capacity is what matters when you are stacking three receptacles or switch/receptacle combinations on one exterior location instead of running three separate boxes.
2) What are the outside dimensions of the Mulberry 30601 3-gang box for a surface mount layout?
It measures 6.375 x 4.500 x 2.625 inches overall. Lay that out on the wall before you drill, since the 2.625 inch depth sets how far the box stands off the siding or masonry and a weatherproof cover adds to that projection.
3) Does the Mulberry 30601 come with a cover, or do I order that separately?
The 30601 is the box body only, a 3-gang weatherproof enclosure sized for devices mounted behind a weatherproof cover. Plan on specifying the matching 3-gang cover or in-use cover for the devices you are installing, along with whatever fittings the run calls for, so the opening is actually sealed when the job closes out.
4) What is the difference between the Mulberry 30601 and the Thomas & Betts 2IH3-1 Red-Dot box?
They differ in gang count and how conduit enters the box. The Mulberry 30601 is a 3-gang weatherproof outlet box in powdered die cast aluminum, 6.375 in. x 4.500 in. x 2.625 in. with 59.8 cubic inches of interior volume, sized to hold three wiring devices behind a single weatherproof cover. The Thomas & Betts 2IH3-1 Red-Dot is a 2-gang conduit outlet box supplied with three 1/2-inch hubs and sold in a pack of 100. Choose the 30601 when the opening needs three device positions; choose the 2IH3-1 when two devices are enough and you want factory 1/2-inch hubs for conduit runs, or when you are buying in bulk quantity for a repeat install.
5) Is a die cast aluminum outdoor box like the Mulberry Royal Mountie better than a PVC box for an exterior wall?
They solve the job differently. The 30601 is powder-coated die cast aluminum, so it takes physical abuse and sustained weather exposure on a building exterior, which is why it shows up on commercial work. A nonmetallic alternative such as the Cantex EZ Series PVC multi-gang box is the other route some installers take for residential multi-gang work. If the location sees impact, equipment traffic, or corrosive coastal air, the metal body is the one to specify.
6) Can I use the Mulberry 30601 on a wet location patio or deck circuit?
That is what it is built for. The Royal Mountie 30601 is a weatherproof outlet box intended for outdoor and wet-location electrical installations, including patio, deck, and building-exterior circuits on both residential and commercial work. The aluminum body is there for corrosion resistance over long outdoor service.
7) I need hubs for conduit entry on a weatherproof box. Does the Mulberry 30601 cover that, or do I need a different style?
The 30601 is described as a 3-gang weatherproof outlet box for surface-mount exterior device installations, not as a hubbed conduit outlet body. If your run calls for threaded hubs sized to the conduit, a conduit outlet box such as the Thomas and Betts 2IH3-1 Red-Dot with three 1/2 inch hubs is the style to look at, though that one is 2-gang rather than 3.
8) Can I use a PVC multi-gang box instead of the Mulberry 30601 for an outdoor receptacle?
The Cantex EZ Series PVC multi-gang box is a nonmetallic residential outlet box and is the usual alternative when you are running PVC raceway or nonmetallic cable and want no metal in the assembly. The Mulberry 30601 Royal Mountie is a powdered die cast aluminum 3-gang weatherproof box with a 59.8 cubic inch cavity, which is the path for metallic conduit systems and for exterior locations where a rigid metal enclosure is wanted. Match the box material to the raceway system and the grounding method already on the job rather than swapping one for the other by gang count alone.
9) Which outdoor box should I use if I only need two devices?
Step down to a 2-gang enclosure. The Thomas & Betts 2IH3-1 Red-Dot is a 2-gang conduit outlet box with three 1/2-inch hubs already provided, which suits a two-device exterior opening fed by 1/2-inch conduit. The Mulberry 30601 Royal Mountie is the 3-gang size at 6.375 in. x 4.500 in. x 2.625 in., so it will leave an unused device position and a larger wall footprint if only two devices are going in.
10) Is the Cantex EZ Box a direct replacement for the Mulberry 30601?
No. The Cantex EZ Series is a PVC multi-gang residential outlet box, while the Mulberry 30601 is a die cast aluminum weatherproof box with a stated 6.375 in. x 4.500 in. x 2.625 in. body and 59.8 cubic inch volume. The materials, mounting footprint and cover interface are different, so a cover or strap set made up for the 30601 will not carry over. Treat the EZ Box as a different system rather than a drop-in swap.
11) What is the Mulberry part number I order for the 3-gang Royal Mountie weatherproof box?
Order Mulberry 30601. It is the 3-gang member of the Royal Mountie weatherproof enclosure line, in powder-coated die cast aluminum. Giving the supplier 30601 plus the gang count avoids landing on a 1-gang or 2-gang body from the same family.
