Yes. The Royal Mountie 1-gang box is a weatherproof enclosure built for exterior, exposed, wet and damp location wiring, which is why it shows up on exterior receptacles and switches, outdoor light fixtures, and deck, patio and landscape work. Keep in mind the box is only half the assembly: the weatherproof rating in service depends on the cover or in-use enclosure you mount on it, so you still need the correct gasketed cover for the device.
2) Is a PVC outlet box an equivalent substitute for the Royal Mountie aluminum box?
They are different animals. The Royal Mountie is powdered die-cast aluminum with a powder-coated finish, built for exterior and wet-location device wiring. The Cantex EZ Box is a PVC multi-gang residential outlet box - a nonmetallic box for multi-gang residential device work rather than a single-gang metal weatherproof enclosure. If your spec calls for a metal exterior box with conduit, the aluminum body is the one to hold to; if you are running nonmetallic residential circuits, the PVC box is the comparable choice.
3) Will a die-cast aluminum outlet box hold up in coastal or corrosive outdoor exposure?
