The ABS DWV female adapter features a spigot x female NPT thread connection and provides a means for adapting a solvent weld connection to a threaded connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I026150 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Nibco 5803-2 ABS female adapter let me thread onto an existing ABS drain line?
That is exactly what the 5803-2 does. One end is a spigot that solvent cements into an ABS DWV hub or socket, the other is a female NPT thread, so it takes a glued ABS system over to a threaded connection such as a trap adapter nipple, cleanout plug, or a male-threaded metal transition piece. End connection is threaded on the FIPT side, spigot on the other (Spg x F).
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5803-2 ABS female adapter come in?
Six sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch. The 1-1/2 and 2 inch cover most fixture drains and branch waste, 3 and 4 inch handle closet bends and building drains, and 6 inch is there for main house or building sewer work. Order by pipe size and the MPN follows, for example I026050 for 1-1/2 inch and I026300 for 4 inch.
3) Is the 5803-2 spigot end a street fitting that goes into another fitting's hub?
Yes. The spigot end is sized like pipe, so it drops into the socket of another ABS DWV fitting rather than accepting pipe itself. Nibco lists it as a fitting/street adapter as well as straight size. Practically: you glue the spigot into a hub, you do not glue pipe into it. If you need an end that receives pipe, you want a hub x FIPT adapter instead.
4) Can I use an ABS DWV female adapter on a hot water or pressure line?
No. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, Schedule 40 ABS, and it is not a pressure fitting. Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F, which covers dishwasher and laundry discharge into a drain but not supply piping. Nibco also states it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases, so pressure test with water only.
5) Is Nibco ABS DWV fitting approved for commercial buildings and does it meet code?
The 5803-2 carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, UL Listed 94V-0, and is made to ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311 along with CSA B181.1. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing. That is the marking set an inspector looks for on ABS DWV, and the CSA listing matters if you are working in Canada.
6) Can I thread a metal nipple into an ABS female adapter, and do I need to worry about cracking it?
The FIPT socket takes a standard NPT male thread, including steel, brass or a metal trap adapter, and Nibco notes ABS DWV connects to steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings. Plastic female threads are the weak point in that joint: hand tighten plus a turn or two with the tape or compound, and stop. Overtightening a metal male into a plastic female is what splits these. For a permanent buried transition to cast iron, a proper transition fitting or shielded coupling is the better call than a threaded joint.
7) Can I glue an ABS female adapter to PVC drain pipe?
Not with plain cement. This adapter is ABS, black, and ABS bonds to ABS with ABS solvent cement. Joining it to white PVC requires an approved ABS-to-PVC transition cement where local code allows it, or better, a mechanical transition coupling. The cleaner route on a mixed system is to use the threaded end as the changeover point: thread a male adapter of the other material into the FIPT side.
8) Which size Nibco ABS female adapter do I need for a 2 inch floor drain or lavatory branch?
Match the adapter to the nominal pipe size of the line, not the thread you are connecting to. A 2 inch ABS branch takes the 2 inch adapter, MPN I026150; a 1-1/2 inch lavatory or tub waste takes I026050; a 1-1/4 inch line takes I026000. The FIPT thread on each is the same nominal size as the pipe, so a 2 inch adapter gives you a 2 inch NPT female.
9) Will ABS drain fittings hold up to bleach, drain cleaner and commercial cleaning chemicals?
ABS is resistant to a wide range of materials from sewage through commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it holds up in restaurant, multi-family and janitorial waste lines. Combined with the -40 F to 180 F service range it tolerates hot fixture discharge and cold unheated crawlspaces. Continuous discharge above 180 F is out of range.
10) Is ABS DWV worth using instead of cast iron for a commercial drain retrofit?
ABS is lightweight and easy to handle and install, which is the practical argument on a retrofit or an occupied building where hanging cast iron is slow work. It joins by solvent cement or threading and ties into existing steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings, so you do not have to replace a whole stack to work in ABS. Where cast iron still wins is sound deadening in walls shared with occupied space.
