1) What does the Nibco 5803 ABS DWV female adapter connect to on each end?
One end is a hub (solvent weld socket) that cements onto ABS DWV pipe, and the other is a female NPT thread. That's the fitting you use when you need to transition a glued ABS drain line into a threaded connection, like a trap adapter, a cleanout plug, or a threaded male fitting coming off equipment. The threaded side is female, so the mating part has to be male pipe thread.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5803 female adapter come in?
Six sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch. It's a straight size adapter, so the hub and the female thread are the same nominal size, there is no reducing version. It's built to the DWV standards inspectors look for: ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, and UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
4) Can I mix this ABS adapter with my existing white PVC drain lines?
The fitting is black ABS, and the hub is made to be solvent cemented to ABS DWV pipe with ABS cement. ABS and PVC use different cements and are not interchangeable on a glued joint. If your existing line is PVC, keep the glued side in PVC and use the threaded connection to make the changeover, or use a fitting made for the ABS to PVC transition.
5) Can I use an ABS female adapter to connect a drain line to copper or cast iron?
Not directly. The 5803 adapter gets you from solvent welded ABS to a female NPT thread, so it mates with male threaded pipe. To join ABS to steel, copper or cast iron you use a transition fitting made for that purpose, then run ABS from there. The threaded outlet on this adapter is a common place to land that transition.
6) What temperature range can an ABS DWV adapter handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal sanitary drainage and typical hot water discharge from fixtures. It is not for continuous high temperature process waste or boiler discharge, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
7) How do I order the right Nibco 5803 female adapter, and what's the part number?

8) Should I use a female adapter or a male adapter on my ABS drain line?
Depends which half of the thread you need. The 5803 gives you a female NPT socket, so it takes a male threaded part screwing into it, a threaded cleanout plug or a male adapter on the other side. If the part you're connecting to has female threads, you want the male adapter version instead. Both glue to the same Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe on the hub side.
9) Will ABS drain fittings hold up to bleach, drain cleaners and sewage in a rental property?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through common commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it's used across multi-family and commercial sanitary drainage.
