Sta-Kon F9040 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon F9040 ferrule take?
The F9040 is sized for 2/0 AWG stranded conductor. One ferrule per conductor end, and the wire size has to match: crimping a 2/0 ferrule onto a smaller conductor leaves the strands loose in the barrel and the crimp will not hold. Order the ferrule that matches the gauge you are landing, not the gauge of the terminal block.
2) Is the Sta-Kon F9040 ferrule insulated or bare?
Bare. The F9040 is a non-insulated ferrule, so there is no plastic collar on the back end. That matters in two ways: you get no color coding to identify the gauge at a glance, and you get no strain relief or extra dielectric cover at the strip point. On a 2/0 feeder in a panel or enclosure that is usually fine since the conductor insulation butts to the barrel, but if your spec calls for an insulated collar you need the insulated version instead.
3) How long is the barrel on the F9040 2/0 ferrule, and how much insulation do I strip?
The barrel measures .984 inch. Strip the conductor to roughly that length so the strands bottom out in the ferrule and the conductor insulation meets the back of the barrel with no bare copper showing. Strip short and the crimp only catches part of the barrel; strip long and you leave exposed strands outside the terminal.
4) Why would an electrician use a ferrule on 2/0 wire going into a terminal block instead of landing bare stranded copper?
A ferrule like the F9040 consolidates the strands of a 2/0 conductor into one solid pin, so the terminal screw bears evenly on the barrel instead of splaying or shearing individual strands. It keeps stray strands out of the adjacent pole, holds torque better over heat cycles, and makes re-termination repeatable during service. Many control-panel and industrial specs require ferrules on all stranded conductors for exactly those reasons.
5) Where is the Sta-Kon F9040 ferrule made?
Germany. For MRO and institutional buyers tracking country-of-origin on submittals or doing Buy American assessments, the F9040 is a German-made part.
