Sta-Kon BC71 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon BC71 ring terminal crimp onto?
The BC71 is sized for 16-14 AWG conductors. Outside that range the crimp won't hold: a 12 AWG conductor won't seat in the barrel, and anything smaller than 16 AWG will pull out even after a proper crimp. For 12-10 AWG you need a different barrel size in the same style.
2) Is the Sta-Kon BC71 insulated, and does that matter for where I use it?
It's a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no nylon or vinyl sleeve. That means the barrel and tongue are live once energized, so it belongs inside an enclosure, panel, or junction box, or under heat shrink you apply yourself. If you need the strain relief and dielectric covering built in, use an insulated ring terminal instead.
3) What voltage is the BC71 ring terminal rated for?
600 V, which covers standard commercial and industrial branch circuits, control panels, motor terminations, and lighting feeds. It also carries UL file E9809, so it can be used where an inspector wants a listed termination.
4) Should I use a ring terminal or a fork terminal on a 1/4 inch panel stud?
A ring tongue like the BC71 is the right call anywhere the connection can't be allowed to back off a loosened screw, which is why ring terminals are standard on grounds, motor leads, and vibration-prone equipment. A fork or spade slides out sideways if the nut loosens, and its only real advantage is that you can land it without fully removing the nut. On a 1/4 inch stud carrying power or ground, use the ring.
5) Is the BC71 heavy-duty barrel going to need a special crimp tool?
Yes. It's a heavy-duty non-insulated barrel, so it wants a non-insulated crimp die (an indent or hex die), not the color-coded insulated jaws on a common red/blue/yellow crimper. Using insulated-terminal jaws on a bare heavy-wall barrel gives you an under-formed crimp and a high-resistance joint.
6) Is the Sta-Kon BC71 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I land it on an aluminum conductor?
The body is copper, so it's for copper conductors only. Terminating aluminum wire in a copper-only barrel sets up galvanic corrosion and a failing joint; for aluminum you need a lug marked AL or AL/CU. The terminal has a plain metallic finish.
7) Are Sta-Kon BC71 terminals made in the USA for a Buy American job?
Country of origin on the BC71 is the United States, which is what a government, school district, or federally funded project submittal usually needs to see on electrical terminations.
8) What part number do I order for a 16-14 AWG, 1/4 inch stud non-insulated ring terminal from Sta-Kon?
Order Sta-Kon BC71. That's the manufacturer part number for the heavy-duty non-insulated ring tongue covering 16-14 AWG on a 1/4 inch bolt.
