Sta-Kon BC87 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon BC87 ring terminal take?
The BC87 is sized for 16-14 AWG conductors. If you're terminating 12 AWG or larger, or 18-22 AWG control wire, this is the wrong barrel size - a loose or over-stuffed crimp on a ring terminal is the usual cause of a hot connection at the stud.
2) Is the BC87 terminal insulated, and do I need to sleeve it?
It's a non-insulated terminal, bare metal the whole length. In a panel or junction box where the barrel could contact a neighboring lug or a grounded surface, plan on heat shrink or an insulating boot over the crimp. Insulated ring terminals arrive with the sleeve already on the barrel.
3) What voltage is the Sta-Kon BC87 rated for?
600 V, which covers standard commercial and industrial branch circuits, motor terminations, control panels, and switchgear up to 600 volts. It's also UL recognized under file E9809.
4) Is the BC87 ring terminal copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductors?
The BC87 barrel is copper. Copper terminals are for copper conductors; aluminum wire needs an AL9CU rated connector to avoid galvanic corrosion and creep at the joint.
5) Why choose a heavy-duty ring terminal over a fork or spade terminal?
A ring tongue cannot slip off the stud if the nut backs off, so it's what you use on motor terminal boxes, grounding studs, battery and busbar connections, and anything that sees vibration. A fork or spade terminal lets you slide the lug out without fully removing the nut, which is faster for service work but relies on the fastener staying tight. The BC87 is the ring style, in a heavy-duty non-insulated form for 16-14 AWG.
6) Is the Sta-Kon BC87 made in the USA?
Country of origin on the BC87 ring terminal is the United States, which matters on federally funded and Buy American spec jobs where terminations get documented along with the conductor.
7) What is the exact part number to order this Sta-Kon ring terminal under?
Order it as Sta-Kon BC87. One model covers the configuration: non-insulated heavy-duty ring terminal, 16-14 AWG, No. 10 bolt, bare metallic copper finish. There are no finish or size options to specify.
