Sta-Kon K975NP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon K975NP ring terminal take?
The K975NP is sized for 2/0 through 3/0 AWG conductor. It is a non-insulated ring (lug) terminal, so the barrel is bare copper with no insulating sleeve to strip back or color-code. If your feeder is 4/0 or larger, this is not the right lug.
2) Is the Sta-Kon K975NP copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The terminal body is copper with a nickel plating. That makes it a copper-only lug for copper conductor; aluminum feeders need a lug rated AL9CU or AL-only, not this one.
3) Why would I pick a nickel plated lug over a plain tin plated one?
Nickel plating on the K975NP holds up at higher operating temperatures and resists oxidation better than tin, which is why these show up on motor terminations, resistance banks, generator and switchgear connections rather than general branch wiring. For an ordinary 2/0 to 3/0 feeder termination in a panel, a standard tinned copper lug does the same electrical job.
4) Does the K975NP crimp on, or is it a set screw lug?
It is a compression lug, not a mechanical set screw connector. The 2/0 to 3/0 barrel is crimped with a hydraulic or heavy battery-cable crimper using the die for that conductor size, so you need the right tool on hand before the termination.
5) Do I need heat shrink or tape over this terminal after crimping?
Yes, in most installs. Because the K975NP is a non-insulated lug, the barrel and the exposed strands stay bare after crimping, so an adhesive-lined heat shrink sleeve or tape is how you get the insulation and strain relief back. In a lug compartment with adequate clearance it can also be left bare.
6) Is the Sta-Kon K975NP suitable for a battery or DC bus termination?
It works for that duty. A 1/2 inch ring tongue on 2/0 to 3/0 copper is a common battery cable, inverter and DC bus size, and the nickel plated copper barrel handles the heat at those connections. Match it to copper cable only.
