Sta-Kon M972 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon M972 ring terminal accept?
The M972 non-insulated ring terminal takes conductors from 4/0 AWG up to 250 kcmil. That covers the big feeder and service conductors, so if you are landing anything smaller than 4/0 you need a different barrel size, not this lug.
2) Will the Sta-Kon M972 lug bolt to a 5/16 inch stud?
Yes. The M972 is built with a 5/16 inch ring tongue, so it lands on a 5/16 inch stud or bolt. A larger stud will not pass through the tongue, so match the hole to the hardware on your bus bar or breaker lug.
3) Can I use the Sta-Kon M972 on aluminum conductors?
No. The M972 is a copper lug intended for copper conductors in the 4/0 to 250 kcmil range. For aluminum or mixed-metal terminations you want a lug specifically listed AL9CU; this one is not that part.
4) Is the Sta-Kon M972 terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
600 V is the stated rating on the M972, which puts it in normal commercial and industrial power distribution territory. It is also UL recognized under file E9809.
5) Does the Sta-Kon M972 lug need to be insulated after crimping?
It ships bare. The M972 is a non-insulated copper tubular lug with a metallic finish, so if the termination needs covering you add heat shrink or a boot separately. Nothing insulating is supplied with the terminal.
6) What is the difference between a tubular ring lug like the M972 and a split-bolt or mechanical lug?
The M972 is a compression lug: the conductor goes into the copper tube and you crimp it, then the 5/16 ring tongue bolts to a stud or pad. A mechanical set-screw lug can be installed with a hand tool and re-opened, but a crimped tubular ring gives a permanent, low-resistance termination and a flat bolt-down face. If you do not own a hydraulic or battery crimper sized for 4/0 to 250 kcmil, go mechanical instead.
