Sta-Kon K972 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon K972 ring terminal take?
The K972 is sized for 2/0 to 3/0 AWG conductors. That is a heavy feeder or battery cable range, so it is not the right lug for anything in the small control-wire sizes. It's a tubular barrel, non-insulated copper terminal, so the barrel is crimped bare and you insulate afterward with heat shrink or tape if the application calls for it.
2) Will the Sta-Kon K972 lug bolt to a 5/16 inch stud?
Yes. The K972 ring tongue is drilled for a 5/16 inch stud or bolt, so it lands directly on a 5/16 breaker lug pad, bus bar stud, or battery post adapter. The ring is a closed tongue, so the fastener has to come off to install it, you cannot slide it in like a spade.
3) Is the K972 terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
The Sta-Kon K972 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809. That covers typical commercial and industrial power distribution work at 600 V and below. Because the barrel is bare, the insulation system over the crimp is on you to supply.
4) Should I use a non-insulated ring terminal or an insulated one for 2/0 cable?
Non-insulated lugs like the K972 are the usual choice on large conductors such as 2/0 to 3/0, where you want to inspect the crimp and then apply your own heat shrink, boot, or tape to match the voltage class and color code. An insulated or nylon-sleeved terminal saves a step but locks you into the factory sleeve and color, and in heavy gauges the sleeve often gets in the way inside crowded gutters and panel wireways.
5) What is the Sta-Kon K972 made of, and can I use it on aluminum conductors?
The K972 barrel is copper, so it is intended for copper conductors. For aluminum or dual-rated AL/CU service entrance conductors you need a lug that is specifically marked AL9CU or AL7CU and installed with the correct inhibitor compound, not a plain copper terminal.
6) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon K972 lug?
Yes. At 2/0 to 3/0 AWG a tubular barrel this size needs a hydraulic or heavy mechanical lug crimper with the matching die, not a hand-squeeze tool for insulated terminals. Match the die to the barrel so you get a full compression on the copper; undersized tooling on heavy cable is the usual cause of hot connections.
