Sta-Kon K973 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon K973 ring terminal accept?
The K973 is sized for 2/0 through 3/0 conductor. That range covers feeder and service-size copper cable, so if you're terminating 1/0 or smaller you need a different lug body - the barrel will be oversized and the crimp won't hold.
2) What stud or bolt size does the K973 ring tongue fit?
The tongue is drilled for a 3/8 inch stud, which is the common bus bar and breaker lug size at this conductor range. If your landing pad is tapped for 1/4 or 5/16, the ring will be loose on the bolt and you want a terminal drilled to match.
3) Is the K973 terminal UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
It carries UL file E9809. Combined with the 600 V rating, that's what an inspector or spec writer is looking for on a 600 V class copper terminal. Crimp it with the die the connector system calls for - a listed connector installed with the wrong tooling is no longer a listed termination.
4) Can I use the Sta-Kon K973 on aluminum cable?
No. It's a copper terminal, so use it on copper conductor only. Landing aluminum in a copper-only lug creates a dissimilar-metal joint that corrodes and loosens; for aluminum feeders you want an AL9CU or aluminum-rated connector instead.
5) Is the Sta-Kon K973 insulated, and do I need to cover it after crimping?
It's a non-insulated tubular ring terminal - bare copper barrel, no sleeve. For any installation where the connection needs covering, plan on heat shrink or tape over the barrel and the exposed conductor. The bare barrel is also what lets you inspect the crimp and use a two-stage indent on heavy cable.
6) What voltage is the Sta-Kon K973 lug rated for?
600 V. That puts it in standard building wiring, panelboard, switchgear and motor connection territory. For medium-voltage terminations you need a different class of connector.
7) How is the Sta-Kon K973 attached to the cable - crimp or set screw?
It's a tubular crimp barrel, not a mechanical set-screw lug. The conductor is stripped, bottomed in the tube, and compressed with a hydraulic or heavy mechanical crimper. At 2/0 to 3/0 that means a battery or hydraulic tool, not a hand plier crimper.
8) What is the K973 lug typically used for on a job?
Terminating 2/0 to 3/0 copper onto a 3/8 inch bolted pad - panel and switchgear bus, transformer and generator landings, large motor terminal boxes, and grounding to a 3/8 inch bus hole. Bare copper tubular body, metallic finish, made in Mexico.
