Sta-Kon J973 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon J973 ring terminal take?
The J973 is sized for 1/0 AWG through 2/0 AWG copper conductors. It's a tubular barrel lug, so the stripped conductor seats fully into the barrel before crimping. Undersized wire in that barrel won't hold a proper crimp, so match the conductor to the 1/0-2/0 range rather than filling with strands from a smaller cable.
2) Is this ring terminal insulated, and does it need a sleeve or tape after crimping?
The J973 is a non-insulated terminal, bare copper with no plastic or nylon collar. On a 600 V circuit the barrel and tongue are live once energized, so plan on heat shrink, an insulating boot, or adequate air clearance inside the enclosure. If you'd rather the insulation come built in, choose an insulated ring terminal instead.
3) Can I crimp aluminum cable in the Sta-Kon J973?
No. The J973 is a copper terminal rated for copper conductors in the 1/0 to 2/0 range. Aluminum feeders need a terminal specifically marked AL or AL9CU along with the correct inhibitor compound; putting aluminum into a copper-only barrel creates a dissimilar metal joint that loosens and overheats.
4) Can I use the Sta-Kon J973 on a 480 V panel?
Yes, the J973 carries a 600 V rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480, and 600 V class work. Being non-insulated, the voltage rating is about the terminal's use category, not standoff distance, so the enclosure and your conductor insulation still have to provide the separation.
5) Is the Sta-Kon J973 UL listed for an inspected job?
The J973 is covered under UL file E9809. That is the reference an inspector or submittal reviewer will want for the terminal on a 600 V, 1/0 to 2/0 copper termination.
6) What's the difference between a tubular ring terminal like this and a two-hole compression lug?
A single-hole tubular ring lug like the J973 lands on one 3/8 inch stud and is the usual choice for battery posts, disconnect studs, and equipment ground bars. A two-hole lug is what you use on bus bar where the connection has to resist rotation and carry mechanical load, and where the drawing calls out hole spacing. If the spec sheet gives a center-to-center dimension, you need a two-hole lug, not this one.
