Sta-Kon J975 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon J975 ring terminal accept?
The J975 is sized for 1/0 through 2/0 AWG copper conductors. If you're terminating 2 AWG or 4/0, this isn't the lug for it, pick the barrel sized to that conductor instead.
2) Will the Sta-Kon J975 lug bolt to a 1/2 inch stud?
Yes. The J975 ring tongue is a 1/2 inch stud size, so it lands on a 1/2 inch bolt or threaded stud on a breaker, bus bar, or ground pad. It will also slip over a smaller stud, but the hole will be oversized and you'd want a flat washer under the nut.
3) Can I use the Sta-Kon J975 on aluminum conductors?
No. It's a copper terminal intended for copper conductors in the 1/0 to 2/0 range. For aluminum feeders you need a lug specifically marked AL or AL9CU, otherwise you create a dissimilar-metal connection.
4) Is the J975 terminal insulated, and do I need to cover it after crimping?
It's a non-insulated tubular ring terminal, bare copper with no sleeve. Anywhere the connection needs dielectric cover or strain relief, you add heat shrink or tape over the barrel yourself. If you'd rather the insulation came on the lug, choose an insulated ring terminal in the same 1/0 to 2/0 range.
5) What voltage is the Sta-Kon J975 rated for?
600 V. That covers standard commercial and industrial branch and feeder work, panelboards, motor terminations, and control gear. It is not a medium-voltage lug.
6) Is the J975 a crimp lug or a mechanical set-screw lug?
It's a tubular barrel crimp lug. The conductor seats in the closed barrel and you compress it with a die-set crimper matched to the 1/0 to 2/0 range. There's no set screw, so if you want a tool-free termination you need a mechanical lug instead.
7) Will the J975 terminal corrode or need plating for a ground connection?
The lug is bare copper with a metallic finish, no tin or plating called out. That's fine for dry indoor terminations on copper bus and ground bars. Outdoors or in damp locations, use an oxide inhibitor at the joint and shrink-sleeve the barrel.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon J975 made?
Mexico. Useful if your project has country-of-origin reporting on the submittal package.
