Sta-Kon F10731NP – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the F10731NP terminal insulated, and do I need to sleeve it after crimping?
It's a non-insulated ring terminal, so the barrel is bare metal once crimped. On anything in a panel, junction box, or battery landing where the barrel could contact an adjacent conductor or a grounded surface, plan on heat shrink or an insulating sleeve over the crimp. If you'd rather not add that step, specify an insulated ring terminal in No. 4 AWG instead.
2) What is the Sta-Kon F10731NP made of, and is it suitable for copper conductor only?
The terminal body is copper with a nickel plating. Copper barrels are intended for copper conductor; they are not dual-rated for aluminum wire unless the terminal is marked AL/CU, so don't land aluminum in it. The nickel plate is the reason to pick this one over a tin-plated copper lug, it holds up better at elevated temperature and in corrosive or wash-down locations.
3) Can I crimp this No. 4 AWG ring terminal with a hand tool, or does it need a hydraulic crimper?
A No. 4 AWG copper barrel is heavy-wall and needs a proper die crimp, either a large mechanical ratchet tool or a hydraulic head with the matching die for the barrel size. Pliers or a small insulated-terminal tool will not produce a compliant crimp on this size. The crimp tool and die are not supplied with the terminal, so order them separately if you don't already have the No. 4 die on the truck.
4) Is a ring terminal like the F10731NP better than a spade or fork terminal for a 1/4 inch stud?
A ring tongue is the closed-barrel style that has to come off the stud entirely to be removed, which is why it is specified on vibration-prone and critical connections, battery and motor landings, grounding studs. A fork or spade tongue slips off sideways under a loosened nut, so it's used where terminations get serviced often. For a No. 4 AWG feeder or ground onto a 1/4 inch stud, the ring is the one to use.
5) Why choose a nickel-plated ring terminal instead of a standard tin-plated one?
Nickel plating is the high-temperature and corrosion-resistant choice. Electricians reach for it on heater and furnace terminations, generator and motor connections, and exterior or damp locations where a tin plate would oxidize. For ordinary dry interior panel work, a tin-plated copper ring terminal in the same No. 4 AWG, 1/4 inch stud configuration does the same electrical job.
6) Where is the Sta-Kon F10731NP terminal manufactured?
Production is in Mexico. For agencies and institutional buyers working to a domestic-sourcing requirement, that country of origin is worth confirming against your procurement rules before you standardize on this part number across a facility.
