Norton Rixson M19-RH-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many M19 intermediate pivots do I need on a tall door?
The Norton Rixson M19 covers doors 60 inches (1524mm) to 90 inches (2286mm) in height with one intermediate pivot. Above that, add another pivot for each additional 30 inches (762mm) of door height. So a 10-foot leaf gets a second intermediate on top of the top and bottom pivots.
2) Is the Rixson M19 pivot handed, and do I need to order left and right separately?
Handing matters here. The M19 is a handed pivot, ordered Left Hand or Right Hand, so a pair of doors needs one of each. Determine the hand from the door's swing before you order, because a right hand pivot will not mortise correctly into a left hand opening.
3) What is the difference between the 3/4 inch and 1-1/2 inch offset M19 pivots?
The offset is how far the door's pivot centerline sits out from the frame face, and it has to match the offset of the top and bottom pivots and the floor closer already in the opening. The M19 is offered in 3/4 inch (19mm) offset and 1-1/2 inch (38mm) offset. Pick the one that matches the rest of the hanging hardware on that door, not the one that looks close.
4) Can I use a standard M19 pivot on a fire rated door assembly?
No. The standard M19 is non-ferrous base metal and carries no fire rating, so it does not belong on a labeled assembly. For fire door assemblies Rixson builds the same pivot in ferrous material, specified as FM19. There is also a 3/4 inch offset version carrying a 20 minute label if that is the rating your opening needs.
5) Will the M19 mortise into a flush wood or hollow metal door and frame?
The M19 is a full mortise pivot for full surface, flush door and frame applications, so both the door edge and the frame get routed for the leaves. It ships with wood screws and machine screws, which covers a wood leaf into a hollow metal frame without a separate fastener order. Torx screws are available if your spec calls for them.
6) I need to specify M19 pivots for a bid package. What do I have to call out on the order?
Three things decide the part: offset (3/4 inch or 1-1/2 inch, or 3/4 inch with a 20 minute label), hand (left or right), and finish from the eleven BHMA codes offered. Get the offset from the floor closer and top pivot already specified on the opening, and the hand from the door swing. If the opening is a labeled fire assembly, specify FM19 instead for the ferrous build.
7) What does an intermediate pivot actually do if I already have a top and bottom pivot?
An intermediate pivot sits between the top and bottom pivots and carries part of the leaf's weight so the door does not sag or bind over time. On the M19 it also holds the door in line while you set the floor closer and bottom pivot, which is what makes a heavy offset hung leaf hang true. It is not a substitute for the top and bottom pivots, it works with them.
8) Is the M19 pivot rated for a high traffic commercial entrance?
Heavy duty and built for commercial openings, which is what an office lobby, school corridor, or hospital entry needs. The non-ferrous base metal also resists corrosion, so it holds up in humid or wash-down areas better than a plain steel part.
9) Do I need an electrified pivot to run power through the door with the M19?
The M19 is a mechanical pivot with no electrical provision, so it will not transfer power to an electrified lock or exit device. If the opening needs power at the leaf, plan on an electric power transfer or a door cord as a separate item and use the M19 purely to hang and align the door.
10) What finishes can I get the Rixson M19 pivot in to match the other door hardware in my building?
Eleven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and BSP black suede powder. Match the BHMA number on the hardware you already have and the pivot will read as part of the same set. On a full mortise pivot most of the part is buried anyway, so only the exposed leaf edge shows.
