NSi ISR-1/0C – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire sizes does the NSi Polaris Vision Tap ISR in-line splice cover?
Two wire ranges are offered in the ISR Series. The ISR-1/0C takes 1/0 AWG down to 14 AWG, and the ISR-250C takes 250 MCM down to 6 AWG. Pick by the largest conductor going in: if you are reducing a 250 MCM feeder to a smaller branch conductor, the ISR-250C is the one; for anything from 1/0 down, use the ISR-1/0C.
2) Can I use an ISR in-line splice in an outdoor pull box or a wet underground vault?
No. The Polaris Vision Tap ISR splice is rated for dry locations only, so it should not go in outdoor boxes, handholes, underground vaults, or anywhere subject to moisture. For those, you need a submersible-rated connector and appropriate sealing. Indoors, it is fine in panelboards, load centers, and branch-circuit work.
3) Is the NSi ISR splice rated for 480V three-phase feeder work?
Yes. The ISR insulated splice carries a 600V rating with a 90 degree C conductor temperature rating, which covers 120/208, 277/480, and typical feeder and service-entrance tap voltages in commercial buildings.
4) Can I use an in-line reducer to step a large feeder down to a smaller branch conductor?
That is exactly what the reducer function is for. The ISR takes two different conductor sizes, one per end, within its range, so you can land a 250 MCM feeder against a 6 AWG on the ISR-250C, or a 1/0 against a 14 AWG on the ISR-1/0C, in one insulated body instead of a splice block plus tape.
5) How many conductors go into one ISR splice?
Two. The ISR is a straight in-line splicer/reducer with one port per end, so it joins one conductor to one conductor. If you need to land three or more wires at a common point, an in-line body is the wrong shape of connector for the job.
6) Do I still have to tape or heat-shrink the connection after using one of these?
No taping needed. The ISR comes pre-insulated in Plastisol, so the splice is complete once the conductors are seated and the set screws are torqued. The body is clear, which is the point of the Vision Tap name: an inspector can see conductor insertion depth without cutting anything open.
7) Will the ISR splice accept compact stranded or Class B and C stranded copper?
The ISR is listed for Class B and C wire types, which is standard stranded building wire such as THHN/THWN-2 and XHHW. Combined with the 90 degree C rating, it suits the conductor types normally pulled in commercial panelboard and branch-circuit work.
