  • Features

    • Six-sided internally threaded fastener whose thickness is 0.875 D is the nominal nut size and 1.5 D is their width across the flats, made from austenitic alloys.
    • Designed for use with stainless steel bolts and screws with a specified minimum tensile strength equal to or less than the specified proof stress of the mating nut. Both type of stainless are corrosion resistant with 316 stainless having greater such resistance as well as superior strength at raised temperatures.

Metallics JSN14L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What thread does the Metallics JSN14L hex nut take?
The JSN14L is a 1/4-20 hex nut, so 1/4 inch nominal diameter at 20 threads per inch (UNC coarse). It threads onto any standard 1/4-20 bolt, screw, or threaded rod. Dimensions follow ANSI/ASME B18.2.2, the US standard for hex nut geometry, so it will seat in standard wrenches and sockets.
2) Is the JSN14L nut 18-8 or 316 stainless, and will it hold up outdoors?
It is 18-8 stainless steel, the common austenitic grade. 18-8 is corrosion resistant and suits damp and outdoor electrical work. If you are in a coastal, chlorinated, or high heat environment, 316 is the grade with greater corrosion resistance and better strength at raised temperatures, so specify 316 there instead.
3) Can I mix a stainless nut with a galvanized or zinc plated bolt?
Better not to. The JSN14L is meant to run with stainless steel bolts and screws whose specified minimum tensile strength is equal to or less than the proof stress of the nut. Pairing stainless with plated carbon steel in a wet location sets up galvanic corrosion and you lose the reason you bought stainless. Match the fastener and the nut in the same material.
4) Do Metallics JSN14L stainless nuts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JSN14L is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded or state job carrying domestic sourcing language, these will not satisfy the requirement and you need a domestically produced hex nut instead.
5) How many nuts come in a jar of Metallics JSN14L, and is there an order minimum?
They ship in a jar of 50 pieces, and 50 each is the order minimum. For a crew doing strut, box, and panel mounting, that is one jar per van as a stock item. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
6) Is this a finished hex nut or a thin jam nut?
It is a standard finished hex nut, not a jam nut. Thickness is roughly 0.875 times the nominal nut size and width across flats about 1.5 times that size, which measures out to 0.212 to 0.226 inches thick on the 1/4-20. A jam nut would be about half that height and is only for locking against a primary nut.
7) Is this stainless nut hard enough to torque down without galling or deforming?
Hardness is Rockwell B95 to C32, which is the normal range for an 18-8 austenitic hex nut. It takes standard torque for a 1/4-20 stainless joint, but stainless on stainless does gall if you run it down fast and dry, so go slow or use an anti-seize on the threads.
