Nuts 3/8-16 Hx Nut SS (Jar 50)
Additional Notes
- Other sizes and quantities available by request
Features
- Designed for use with stainless steel bolts and screws with a specified minimum tensile strength equal to or less than the specified proof stress of the mating nut. Both type of stainless are corrosion resistant with 316 stainless having greater such resistance as well as superior strength at raised temperatures.
- Six-sided internally threaded fastener whose thickness is 0.875 D is the nominal nut size and 1.5 D is their width across the flats, made from austenitic alloys.

Metallics JSN16316SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JSN16316SS hex nut thread onto a 3/8-16 UNC bolt?
Yes. The JSN16316SS is a 3/8 inch hex nut with 16 threads per inch, which is standard UNC coarse thread for 3/8 inch fasteners, cut to ANSI/ASME B18.2.2. It will run onto any 3/8-16 coarse-thread bolt, stud, or all-thread rod. It will not fit 3/8-24 fine thread.
2) Is 316 stainless worth it over 18-8 for outdoor or wet locations?
These nuts are 316 stainless steel. Both 18-8 and 316 are austenitic and corrosion resistant, but 316 holds up better in corrosive service and keeps more strength at elevated temperatures. For coastal, wash-down, chemical, or rooftop work it is the one to use; for dry interior strut and conduit hanging, 18-8 usually covers it.
3) Do these Metallics stainless nuts qualify for a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?
No. The JSN16316SS is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. If your contract carries a domestic-sourcing clause, you need a domestic-marked hex nut instead.
4) What wrench or socket size do I need for these 3/8-16 stainless hex nuts?
Width across the flats runs 0.628 to 0.650 inch, which is a 5/8 inch wrench or socket. Nut height is 0.320 to 0.337 inch, so allow at least that much thread projection past the joint for full engagement.
5) Can I mix these stainless nuts with galvanized or plated steel bolts?
Pair them with stainless bolts and screws whose minimum tensile strength is equal to or less than the proof stress of the nut, which is how Metallics specifies them. Mating 316 stainless to zinc or galvanized steel in a wet location sets up dissimilar-metal corrosion and gives up the reason you bought stainless, so keep the whole assembly stainless.
6) How many 3/8-16 stainless nuts come in a jar, and can I order fewer than 50?
They ship in a jar of 50, and 50 each is the order minimum, so a jar is the smallest buy. Metallics offers other sizes and quantities by request if you need a different count or a different thread size.
7) What trades use the JSN series stainless hex nuts?
They are stocked for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work: strut and channel assemblies, hanger rod, pipe clamps, equipment mounting, and anywhere a 3/8-16 stainless fastener joint is called for.
8) How hard are these 316 stainless hex nuts, and will they gall on a stainless bolt?
Hardness is Rockwell B95 to C32. Stainless on stainless is prone to galling under dry, fast run-down, so thread the nut by hand to start, keep the speed low, and use an anti-seize on long rod runs.
9) How much does a jar of 50 of these 3/8-16 stainless nuts weigh?
The packaged jar weighs 0.82 lbs, measuring 3 by 3 by 2.15 inches, so it drops into a van bin or a tool bag without much thought.
