Metallics JHHN58 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JHHN58 heavy hex nut thread onto 5/8 inch all-thread rod?
Yes, as long as the rod is 5/8-11 UNC. The JHHN58 is a 5/8-11 heavy hex nut, 11 threads per inch, which is the standard coarse pitch for 5/8 inch rod and bolts. It will not run on 5/8-18 fine thread.
2) What grade is the Metallics JHHN58 nut and is it strong enough for threaded rod hangers?
Grade 2 steel, with hardness in the Rockwell B68 to C32 range. Grade 2 heavy hex is the normal choice for mating with low carbon all-thread rod on electrical, plumbing, and HVAC hanger work. If the engineer specified a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt assembly, the nut needs to match that grade, not Grade 2.
3) Do these nuts qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JHHN58 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced heavy hex nut instead.
4) Is a heavy hex nut different from a standard hex nut, and when do I need the heavy pattern?
Heavy hex is the larger pattern: wider across the flats and thicker than a finished hex nut of the same thread, so it spreads load over a bigger bearing area and takes more wrench torque without rounding. The JHHN58 is the heavy pattern in 5/8-11, 1.031 to 1.062 inches across the flats. Use it on structural connections, pipe hanger rod, and anywhere the drawing calls out heavy hex. If your bolt hole or a tight clearance was laid out for a standard hex nut, the heavy nut may not clear.
5) Can I use these zinc plated nuts outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JHHN58 is zinc plated steel, which handles indoor and sheltered exterior work and resists ordinary humidity. It is not stainless. For wet, coastal, chlorinated, or chemically aggressive locations, go to an 18-8 stainless heavy hex nut in the same 5/8-11 thread instead.
6) How many 5/8-11 heavy hex nuts come in a jar, and is there a minimum order?
The JHHN58 ships as a jar of 28 nuts. The order minimum is 25 each. Jar packaging keeps them together on the cart or in the gang box rather than loose in a bin.
7) Can I get 5/8-11 heavy hex nuts in a different quantity or another size?
Yes. The JHHN series runs other sizes and pack quantities by request, so if you need a bulk box rather than the 28 count jar, or a different thread diameter for the same job, it can be sourced.
