Sta-Kon RB873ML – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RB873ML ring terminal take?
The RB873ML is sized for 18-14 AWG stranded or solid copper wire. The blue nylon insulation is the standard color code for that 16-14 AWG range, so if you are terminating 12 AWG or larger you need a yellow-coded barrel instead, not this one.
2) What stud or screw size does the Sta-Kon RB873ML ring fit?
It is a No. 10 ring tongue, so it drops over a #10 screw or stud. It will also pass over a smaller #8 or #6 screw, though you lose some contact area under the head. For a 1/4-20 stud you need a larger ring tongue.
3) Is the Sta-Kon RB873ML a loose piece terminal or a reeled terminal for a machine?
This one is reeled, left-hand wind. That makes it a feed for an automated or semi-automated crimp applicator, not a handful of loose terminals for field work. If you are crimping by hand at a panel, order the equivalent loose-piece ring terminal instead, and if your applicator feeds right-hand you need the right reel version.
4) Is a nylon insulated ring terminal better than a vinyl one for my application?
Nylon is the insulation here. It takes more abuse during crimping and handling than vinyl and resists cracking and abrasion better, which is why it gets specified for machine-fed production and for terminals that get flexed in a harness. Vinyl is the cheaper choice for low-stress indoor panel work. Either way, insulation is not a substitute for strain relief on a moving conductor.
5) Why use a ring terminal instead of a spade terminal on a terminal block?
A ring tongue is a closed barrel at the tongue end, so it cannot vibrate off a stud if the screw backs out. That is why ring terminals get specified on motors, grounding studs, breakers, and anything subject to vibration. A spade or fork comes off without removing the screw, which is faster for service but is not permitted where a captive connection is required. The RB873ML is the ring version in 18-14 AWG for a No. 10 stud.
6) Do I need a special crimp tool for the Sta-Kon RB873ML?
Insulated barrel terminals in the 18-14 AWG range need an insulated-crimp die, usually color-keyed to the blue barrel. A bare-terminal or open-barrel die will cut the nylon instead of forming it. Since these come on a left-hand reel, the normal path is a crimp applicator set up for that reel feed rather than a hand tool.
7) Is the Sta-Kon RB873ML ring terminal made in the USA?
Yes, country of origin on the RB873ML is the United States. That matters if you are filling a government, federal facility, or Buy American project where domestic origin has to be documented on the submittal.
