Sta-Kon RE737NP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the RE737NP terminal copper or tin plated, and will it work on aluminum bus or a nickel-plated lug?
The barrel and tongue on the RE737NP are nickel plated, which is what you want for higher-temperature terminations and for dissimilar metal contact where plain tin would be the weak point. It is a nylon insulated ring terminal, so the insulation sleeve is nylon rather than vinyl.
2) Should I use a ring terminal or a spade terminal for a 3/8 inch stud connection?
Use the ring, which is what the RE737NP is. A ring tongue has to be slipped over the stud, so the nut comes all the way off during service, but it cannot vibrate or pull off sideways under load. A spade or fork tongue is faster to service because it slides out under a loosened nut, which is exactly why it is the wrong choice on a vibrating or high-current 3/8 inch stud like a motor, disconnect, or battery lug.
3) My panel uses color-coded terminals by gauge. What color is the RE737NP?
Blue. On a 6 AWG nylon insulated ring terminal that blue sleeve is the gauge marker crews use to sort terminals on the bench, so it will read consistently alongside the rest of your 6 AWG terminations.
4) Does the nylon insulation on the RE737NP hold up better than vinyl?
Nylon is the insulation on this terminal, and that is the reason to pick it over a vinyl insulated ring of the same 6 AWG and 3/8 inch stud size. Nylon resists abrasion and splitting during crimping and handling, which matters when you are pulling 6 AWG into a crowded enclosure. Vinyl is the lower cost option and tends to be chosen for light duty indoor work.
5) What part number do I order for a Sta-Kon 6 AWG nickel plated ring terminal, and where is it made?
RE737NP is the part number to specify, and it is made in Mexico. One model covers the configuration, so there is no finish or stud variant to pick after you have the number.
