The Oatey 33760 is sized for 1-1/2 in. DWV pipe, with a 7-1/2 in. overall length on the stem. Use it for 1-1/2 in. drain, waste and vent runs, tubular or DWV. For 2 in. DWV you need the 2 in. version of the hook, not this one.
2) Can I install a plastic J-hook hanger in a tight joist bay where I can't swing a hammer straight on?
That's what the diagonal nail path is for. The nails are pre-loaded in the stem and driven at an angle, so you can set the hook in tight spots where a straight-on nail path won't work. A locking finger holds the pipe at any angle, including inverted, so it also works hanging off the underside of framing.
3) What temperature range is the Oatey ABS J-hook rated for?
Minus 40 F to 180 F. That covers normal DWV drain and vent service, including unconditioned crawl spaces and attics, but it is not a hanger for hot water supply lines running above 180 F.
4) Do I need anything besides the nails to secure this pipe hook?
No. The nails come pre-loaded in the stem, so the hook installs as shipped. If you want a belt-and-suspenders hold, the body has additional holes so you can add a cable tie or your own fastener through it.
