OATEY 33742 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Oatey 33742 J-hook hanger support?
The 33742 is sized for 3 inch DWV pipe, with a 7-1/2 inch overall dimension on the hook body. It is a J-style hanger, so the pipe drops into the open hook and the locking finger closes over it.
2) Do I need to buy nails separately to install these DWV hangers?
No. Nails come pre-loaded in the stem, so the hanger goes up with a hammer and nothing else. The stem uses a diagonal nail path, which is what lets you drive it in tight spots where you cannot swing straight at a joist face.
3) Can this J-hook hold pipe overhead or at an angle, or only flat against a joist?
The locking finger holds at any angle, including fully inverted, so it works for pipe run under a floor deck or against an angled surface as well as a straight joist face.
4) Can I add cable ties to the Oatey 33742 hanger for extra hold?
Yes. The hanger body has additional holes so you can secure the pipe with cable ties, wire, or other fasteners on top of the nailed stem. Useful on long horizontal runs or where vibration is a concern.
5) What is the Oatey 3 inch DWV J-hook made of, and will it handle hot drain water?
It's molded from ABS (offered in black and white) and rated for a service range of -40F to 180F. That covers normal DWV service including hot waste discharge from a dishwasher or laundry, and it holds up in an unconditioned crawlspace or attic.
6) Is the Oatey 33742 pipe hanger UPC listed for code work?
Yes, the 33742 J-hook is UPC listed, which is what an inspector on a Uniform Plumbing Code jurisdiction will be looking for on the pipe support.
7) How many J-hooks come in a bag, and what is the part number?
Oatey part number 33742 ships 25 hooks to a polybag, so one bag covers a full run of 3 inch DWV on a typical house or a small multi-family riser without reordering.
