OATEY 31348 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What tube sizes does the Oatey 31348 4-in-1 fitting brush clean?
The Oatey 31348 handles 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch tube, inside and out. Four cleaning surfaces in one tool: ID brushes for the inside of 1/2 and 3/4 inch fittings, OD brushes for the outside of 1/2 and 3/4 inch tube. It works on copper and plastic tube.
2) Can I use the Oatey 31348 brush to prep copper before soldering?
Yes, that is what it is for. It cleans both the inside of the fitting socket and the outside of the tube end on 1/2 and 3/4 inch copper, which is the oxide removal step before flux and solder. The inside brush is high-carbon steel and the outside brush is hard-tempered steel.
3) Will the Oatey 31348 work on PEX or CPVC, or is it copper only?
It is rated for both copper and plastic tube in 1/2 and 3/4 inch, so it can scuff and clean plastic tube ends as well as copper. Note the bristles are steel, so on plastic use a light touch.
4) Do I need separate 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch fitting brushes if I carry the Oatey 31348?
No. The 31348 combines all four cleaning functions in a single body, so one tool in the pouch covers both common residential sizes inside and out instead of four separate brushes. At 0.1 lb it is a tool-bag item, not a bench tool.
5) What is the Oatey 4-in-1 brush housing made of, and will it hold up in a truck?
The body is high-impact polystyrene, which resists cracking from knocks in a tool bag or truck box. The brushes themselves are steel, so keep it dry to avoid rust on the bristles.
6) What is the Oatey part number and UPC for the 1/2 and 3/4 inch 4-in-1 brush?
Order it as Oatey 31348. The UPC on the package is 038753313481. There is one configuration, so there is nothing further to specify.
