1) Will the Oatey 33750 J-hook work with PEX and CPVC, or is it only for copper?
All three. The 33750 baby J-hook supports copper, CPVC and PEX water supply lines run off joists and rafters. The hook sizing is 1/2 inch CTS (copper tube size), so it matches 1/2 inch nominal copper, CPVC and PEX tubing.
2) Does the Oatey 33750 hold the pipe tight, or does it let the line move?
It is a loose support, not a clamp. The baby J-hook cradles the tube and allows the piping system to expand and contract, which is what you want on CPVC and PEX runs that move with temperature. If you need the line locked in place at a fixed point, use a clamp-style strap instead.
3) How much weight can a 1/2 inch Oatey baby J-hook hold?
50 lbs safe working load per hook. For a horizontal water line run, space hooks so no single hook is carrying more than that, including the water in the pipe.
4) How does the Oatey baby J-hook fasten to a stud or joist?
It nails flush against a wall or a stud, so the mounting leg sits tight to the framing with no standoff. The 7-1/2 inch leg length lets you get the nail up past the tube and into solid wood on a joist face or rafter.
5) Is the Oatey 33750 metal or plastic, and will it react with copper pipe?
It is plastic, molded from high impact ABS. Because there is no metal touching the tube, there is no galvanic concern when it carries copper, and no need for an isolator the way a steel hanger would want one.
