1) Will the Oatey 33745 baby J-hook work with PEX and CPVC, or is it copper only?
The Oatey 33745 supports copper, CPVC and PEX water supply lines. It's sized 1/2 inch CTS, so it takes 1/2 inch copper tube size pipe in any of those three materials. The ABS body is non-metallic, so there's no galvanic concern with copper.
2) How much weight can a 1/2 inch Oatey baby J-hook hold?
50 lbs safe working load per hook. For a horizontal run of 1/2 inch water line that's well clear of what the pipe and water weigh, so normal joist and rafter spacing governs your hook count, not the load rating.
3) Can I nail these J-hooks flat against a stud, or do they only mount under joists?
Both. The 33745 nails flush against a wall or stud as well as hanging pipe from joists and rafters, so the same hook works for a vertical stud-cavity run and an overhead horizontal run.
4) Does a plastic J-hook let PEX move when it expands?
Yes. The Oatey baby J-hook is designed to allow for expansion and contraction of the piping system, so the tube isn't clamped rigidly. That matters most on PEX and CPVC hot lines, which move noticeably more than copper over a long run.
5) How many Oatey 33745 J-hooks come in a bag?
They come 25 to a polybag. Each hook weighs about 0.02, so a bag is light enough to carry a full rough-in's worth up a ladder in one hand.
6) What's the difference between a baby J-hook and a standard J-hook?
