OATEY 1546S – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 1546S PVC cement be used on potable water lines, or is it DWV only?
The Oatey 1546S heavy duty clear cement is recommended for potable water, pressure pipe, conduit and DWV, so it is not limited to drain, waste and vent work. It is a PVC cement and meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec for PVC solvent cement.
2) Will PVC cement work on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 1546S is formulated for PVC only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific solvent cement and ABS needs ABS cement; an ABS-to-PVC transition joint needs a transition cement. Using PVC cement on those materials will not give a reliable joint.
3) What temperature can I install this PVC cement at? We are working outdoors in cold weather.
Recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F you are outside the recommended window, so for winter work in unheated space you want a cold-weather solvent cement rated for lower temperatures instead.
4) Is heavy duty cement the right choice for 4 inch and 6 inch PVC, or should I use regular bodied?
Heavy duty is the right call on large diameter pipe. The 1546S uses a thick formula that fills gaps in large diameter pipe and loose fitting joints, where a thin regular-bodied cement can starve the joint. On small diameter tight-fitting pipe a medium or regular body spreads easier.
5) Is Oatey 1546S low-VOC enough for California air quality districts?
Yes. It is a low-VOC solvent cement that meets SCAQMD 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40, which is what gets it accepted on jobs in the South Coast and Bay Area districts.
6) Do I need a separate primer with this clear PVC cement?
The 1546S is a solvent cement, not a primer, and it is clear rather than purple. Many codes and inspectors require a visible purple primer on PVC pressure joints, so plan on ordering primer separately; the clear cement leaves no color evidence of prep on the joint.
7) What service temperature will a joint made with Oatey 1546S handle?
Maximum use temperature is 60 degrees C. That covers normal cold water distribution and DWV service, but it rules out hot-water applications beyond that limit.
8) Why pick clear PVC cement instead of the purple-tinted kind?
Clear is chosen where the joint will be visible and you do not want color bleed, exposed fixture trim, kitchen and bath rough-in, or anywhere the finished work shows. The 1546S is a clear heavy duty PVC cement and bonds the same regardless of tint.
9) What size can is the Oatey 1546S, and is it practical for a single service call?
It is a 16 oz can with a product weight of 1.125, which is a crew or shop size rather than a truck-stock touch-up size. For one or two small repairs a 4 or 8 oz can wastes less, since solvent cement thickens once opened and exposed to air.
