OATEY 30011 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey No. 5 paste flux be used on potable water lines?
Yes. The Oatey 30011 No. 5 paste flux is 100% lead-free and certified to NSF standard 14 for performance and NSF standard 61 for health effects, and the material is safe for use in potable water applications. That's the combination a plumbing inspector looks for on domestic water piping.
2) Will Oatey No. 5 flux work on stainless steel or aluminum?
No. The No. 5 paste flux is effective on all metals except aluminum and stainless steel. If you're soldering either of those, this is the wrong flux and you need a product rated for that metal. On copper, brass and the usual plumbing metals it's fine.
3) Does Oatey No. 5 paste flux work with lead-free solder?
It's compatible with all common plumbing solder alloys, so the lead-free 95/5 tin-antimony and tin-silver wires used on domestic water all work with it. The flux itself is 100% lead-free, so you aren't reintroducing lead into a system you soldered with lead-free wire.
4) Is 1.7 oz of Oatey No. 5 flux enough for a repair call, or should I buy a bigger tub?
The 30011 is the 1.7 oz size, about 0.15 lb net, and it ships with a brush in the container. That's a service-truck or single-repair quantity, right for a handful of joints. If you're sweating a full rough-in or a run of large diameter copper, step up to a larger Oatey No. 5 container rather than working through several of these.
5) Will paste flux turn my copper pipe green after soldering?
Oatey's No. 5 paste flux is formulated so it will not turn copper piping green. It's petroleum based, which is what does the cleaning, and it carries an amber color in the container. That matters on exposed copper in a finished mechanical room or a glass-front display where residue discoloration shows.
