1) Can Oatey No. 5 paste flux be used on potable water lines?
Yes. Oatey 30013 No. 5 paste flux is 100% lead-free and safe for potable water work, and it carries NSF Standard 14 (performance) and Standard 61 (health effects) certification. That is the combination most plumbing inspectors and institutional specs look for on domestic water copper.
2) Will Oatey No. 5 flux work on stainless steel or aluminum?
No. The No. 5 paste flux is effective on all metals except aluminum and stainless steel. For copper, brass, and the usual plumbing metals it's fine, but soldering stainless or aluminum needs a flux formulated for those alloys.
3) Is this flux suitable for large diameter copper pipe, or just small tubing?
Oatey No. 5 is a petroleum-base paste flux specifically called out as good for large diameter copper piping. The petroleum carrier does the cleaning work and holds on the joint while you bring heavy copper up to temperature, where a thinner water-soluble flux can run off or burn away first.
4) Does this flux work with lead-free solder, or only 50/50?
It's compatible with all common plumbing solder alloys, so lead-free 95/5 tin-antimony and tin-silver wires work the same as any other. The flux itself is also 100% lead-free, which matters if your job is on potable water.
5) Will this flux leave green corrosion stains on exposed copper?
No. Oatey No. 5 paste flux will not turn copper piping green, which is the reason it gets specified on exposed runs in mechanical rooms and finished spaces where a stained joint is a callback. The paste itself is amber in color.
6) Do I still have to clean and ream the copper if I'm using Oatey No. 5?
The petroleum base in the No. 5 paste gives it cleaning action, and it both cleans and fluxes the copper to get uniform solder flow. That is chemical cleaning of light oxide, not a substitute for mechanically cleaning the tube end and the fitting socket with sand cloth or a tube brush before you brush flux on.
