1) Does the Oatey 43596 area drain fit 2 inch or 3 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The 43596 four-way area drain solvent welds over the outside of 2 inch Schedule 40 DWV pipe, or inside the hub of 3 inch PVC Schedule 40 DWV pipe. That is why it is called four-way: one body covers either size, inside or outside the pipe. It is PVC, so it takes standard PVC solvent cement, not ABS.
2) Does the Oatey 43596 come with a strainer, or do I order that separately?
The strainer is included. The 43596 ships with a removable plastic screw-in strainer plus 2 screws, so nothing extra is needed to finish the top. You supply the PVC primer and solvent cement for the pipe connection.
3) Can I glue this Oatey drain to ABS pipe?
No. The 43596 body is PVC, so it solvent welds to PVC Schedule 40 DWV only. On an ABS system you would need an ABS drain or a proper transition coupling; ABS cement and PVC cement are not interchangeable on a joint that has to stay watertight in a slab.
4) Where can I use this PVC four-way area drain?
Garages, patios, and utility rooms are what the 43596 is built for, along with similar area drain applications. It is a high-impact PVC body with a round screw-in cover, so it suits slab and grade-level drainage rather than a finished floor drain with a trap primer connection.
5) Is the strainer on this area drain removable for cleaning out debris?
Yes. The plastic strainer screws in and lifts out, which matters on a garage or patio drain where leaves and grit collect. Property managers cleaning these seasonally can pull the cover with the 2 supplied screws rather than breaking the drain body out of the slab.
6) Is this drain PVC or cast iron, and will it hold up in a garage floor?
It is high-impact PVC, not metal. For residential and light commercial garages, patios, and utility rooms that is the intended service. If you need a drain that takes vehicle or forklift wheel loading in a commercial bay, a PVC area drain of this type is not the right choice and a cast iron or ductile grate assembly is.
