OATEY 84217 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 84217 cleanout work on both 3 inch and 4 inch ABS drain lines?
Yes. The Oatey 84217 is a general purpose cleanout that fits either 3 inch or 4 inch ABS pipe, so one part covers both of the common residential and light commercial DWV line sizes. The connection is ABS, meaning it solvent welds to ABS pipe or fittings, not to PVC or cast iron.
2) Can I glue the Oatey 84217 cleanout to PVC pipe?
No. Both the body and the connection on the 84217 are ABS, and ABS cement is not a code-accepted joint to PVC. If the drain line in the building is PVC, order the PVC version of the cleanout instead and keep the material consistent through the joint.
3) What is the cover on the Oatey 84217 cleanout made of, and how big is it?
It comes with a 6 inch cast brass cover with a round top. Brass is the finish you see once it is set, and a cast cover stands up to floor traffic and to being wrenched open repeatedly for rodding, which is why these get specified for accessible floor locations rather than a plastic plug alone.
4) Is an ABS cleanout with a brass cover OK where the finished floor will be concrete?
That is the normal use for it. The ABS body solvent welds into the ABS drain line below the slab and the 6 inch cast brass round top sits at the finished surface where a drain tech can get a wrench on it. Set the top flush with the pour so nothing stands proud of the floor.
5) How much does the Oatey 84217 cleanout weigh for ordering and freight?
The 84217 is listed at 4 lbs, most of that in the cast brass cover, with a shipping volume of 0.149. Light enough to carry in quantity for a multi-unit rough-in.
