OATEY 78046 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What outlet size is the Oatey 78046 roof drain and what pipe does it connect to?
The Oatey 78046 is a 6 inch PVC roof drain, so it ties into 6 inch PVC drain piping at the outlet. The body is PVC, which is why it pairs with solvent-welded plastic leader piping rather than cast iron or copper downspout piping.
2) Why does the Oatey 78046 come with a dam collar, and do I need it on a flat roof?
The dam collar sits around the drain to hold a controlled depth of water on the roof, which is how a controlled-flow or secondary drainage design works. On a standard primary drain you leave it off; on a roof designed to pond and meter water off slowly, or on an overflow drain that should only take water above a set depth, the collar is the piece that does it. The 78046 ships with the collar so you can go either way.
3) Is the strainer dome on the Oatey 78046 plastic or metal?
Cast iron. The body of the 78046 is PVC but the dome is cast iron, which is the part that takes foot traffic, hail and roofer abuse on an exposed roof surface. That matters if you have had plastic domes crack or go brittle from UV on previous buildings.
4) What part number should I order for a 6 inch PVC roof drain with a cast iron dome?
Oatey part number 78046. That single number covers the complete assembly: 6 inch PVC drain body, cast iron strainer dome, and dam collar. There are no finish or size options to specify with it.
5) How heavy is the Oatey 78046 roof drain for handling and shipping to the roof?
It weighs 10.3 pounds assembled, most of that in the cast iron dome. That is a one-hand carry up a ladder, unlike a full cast iron roof drain body of the same outlet size.
