OATEY 33850 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a 7-1/2 inch cable tie wrap around 2 inch PVC?
A 7-1/2 inch tie gives you roughly 7-1/2 inches of strap to work with, so the usable loop circumference is under that once the locking head takes up length. That handles bundles up to about 2 inches across. For larger conduit groups or duct, step up to the 11, 14, 24, 36 or 48 inch lengths in the same Oatey tie range.
2) What material are the Oatey 33850 ties made from, and will they hold up in a mechanical room?
They are 6/6 nylon, which is the standard bundling-tie material for interior mechanical and plumbing work. Oatey states the material meets Military standard M-20693, and the dimensions meet MS3367-1. The 7 inch through 36 inch lengths come in natural nylon; the 48 inch is gray.
3) Can Oatey 33850 ties be used to secure tubing as well as electrical cable?
Yes. Oatey lists them for securing cables, tubing and similar runs together, which is why they show up in both plumbing and low-voltage work. At 50 lbs tensile on the 7 inch size they are a bundling tie, not a support or hanger, so use proper strap or clamp hangers where code requires the pipe to be supported.
4) Are these Oatey ties reusable or one-time use?
One-time use. The head uses a locking device that gives a positive, non-slip grip, which means it ratchets closed and does not release. Plan on cutting them off and replacing them if you need to re-pull a bundle.
