OATEY 31231 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey Great White pipe joint compound be used on plastic threads like PVC and CPVC, or only metal?
Both. Oatey 31231 Great White is rated for use on plastic and metal threads, and the compatibility list covers ABS, CPVC, PVC and other plastics along with aluminum, brass, copper and stainless steel. That makes it a single can you can carry for threaded PVC adapters, brass nipples and galvanized or copper fittings on the same job.
2) What pressure and temperature can Great White pipe joint compound handle?
On gases it holds to 3,000 psi over a range of -50 F to 400 F. On liquids it goes to 10,000 psi from -50 F to 500 F. That covers water, steam, caustic and diluted acid lines, so it is usable on hydronic and steam work as well as domestic water.
3) Should I use pipe joint compound with PTFE or just thread seal tape on threaded joints?
Great White is a paste with PTFE in it, so it lubricates the threads as it seals. That matters on larger or tapered metal threads where tape shreds or bunches, and on joints you may need to break down later, because the paste is non-hardening and does not set the fitting solid. Tape is the cleaner choice on small fittings you want to keep dry to the touch; for stubborn or high pressure threaded joints the compound seats better.
4) Is Great White compound safe to use on potable water lines and steam lines in a building?
The formula is non-toxic and specified for water and steam service, along with caustics and diluted acid lines, at up to 500 F on liquids. For threaded potable water connections and steam piping in a facility it is the intended use.
5) Will Great White pipe joint compound stain fixtures or discolor finished work?
The compound is a white, non-staining, non-toxic paste that does not harden or separate in the can. Squeeze-out on a chrome trap arm or a finished fixture wipes off without leaving a mark, which is why it gets used on exposed work under lavatories.
